Also, I don't use my phone at the tennis (I can't see the screen for squat and I'm petrified of the battery running down) so sorry to verveandsolley, too.
But completely agree - what a day !!!
You're write-up is stellar, Bob, spot on, and the hidden gem infos, many thanks.
As you say, Ed was knocking the fluff off the ball, and just on a different plane - his brother had such a grin .... super victory
But Marcus' match was just classic. I thought young Rublev (only 18!) actually played very well, especially when up against it - some amazing volleys, and a beauty of a forehand. And didn't lose it mentally when I thought he would....
But Marcus just bewitched him - a great mix-up of play - and not just the slices but some super top-spin screamers too. It was the variety that killed him. And the hyper-delicate drop shot that he ran down from the opposite corner of the court, and passed Rublev down the line, practically outside the post - just wow!
Joe played a lot better than yesterday, in my view, posted a top class match. Congrats to him. But K was VERY good, and deserved it by a whisker.
Dan Cox seemed to lose concentration, which was a little strange. Just couldn't quite keep it going. Neither set. Bit of a shame. But he's had a good event, well done.
NB Do hope Ed's doubles doesn't mess up his singles tomorrow. (Although with the rain forecast maybe it won't be such an issue).
PS I can't make it tomorrow so, Bob, I'm counting on you to shout loudly !!! (And Oakie, V&S, and everyone else who's there)
Half hoping for some bad weather and it doesn't get under way till late afternoon. Only 2 miles away at work. Would be able to get there by 5. Either way come on Ed & Marcus!!
Time to set off for Roehampton again. The excitement is building already. Just hope the weather holds. See you all there (well at least some of you, hopefully)
Go, Bob ! And may the weather gods be with you.....
Had a great time yesterday also watching a lot of French players (at least half of whom I'd never seen play live before) and although this isn't directly connected (i.e. Mannarino is not in qualis), it made me laugh:
@AdrianMannarino
Rule number 1 in england : never trust an indian guy saying " not spicy , not spicy "
The French are SUCH wimps when it comes to spicy food ....
Less than 5 miles away in Teddington there has been significant light drizzle. It has stopped for the moment, but the atmosphere is damp and the skies are quite dark. I would be very suprised if they start play at 11.00.
