It didn't come across as having a go at Dan Smethurst - and I'd agree that a WC to Jonny O'Mara - on the basis of record, history, and potential - would be a good idea.
I can't see why they don't give most of the qwc to British players and I agree about Jonny O' Mara receiving one what harm why that do and it would give him a boost he is a young player on the rise the other grand slams load their WC AND QWC with their home nationals we should do the same I think all nine QWC should be British players
To be honest, you could give the remaining three to the youngsters (Jay, Ryan and Finn, say)
Or to Gabb, Milton and Bambo as the next three best ranked players (all in the top 500 or nearly).
Or to a random draw of the 4 losing quarter-finalists at the play-offs.
Or to Jonny on form and two others 'on form', as chosen by the powers that be.
i.e. whatever you like really, as long as it has some sort of justification.
But, given the lack of events, funding and tennis industry to generate funds indirectly that this country has, it is dreadful just to leave quali draw cards going begging.....
That makes 3 of us. Is it too late for them to change their minds ? They have spare QWCs available.
They have said that the remaining 3 QWC's will not be used and Jonny has already said that his grass season is over so from two perspectives it is certainly too late for any change of plans.
I am genuinely really annoyed about it. Once again the handful of favoured players are rewarded lavishly with singles and doubles main draw wild cards (even when they have no pedigree in doubles) yet young players are denied an opportunity for a taste of the big time (and a very modest financial reward). Are we really saying that beyond the 8 guys in the main draw and the 6 in qualifying that we have nobody worth giving the opportunity to. Moments like this can be the turning the point in a young players career. We are utterly mad not to give another 3 guys that chance. The Australians had no hesitation give qualifying wild cards to youngsters Oliver Anderson (WR 707), Marc Polmans (WR 840) and Alex De Minaur (WR 1574).
They say every year they are only going to give out 8 wild cards, that's the problem.
Well the LTA say they will recommend a maximum of 8 WCs with the play-offs additionally providing 2 Q WCs. And prior to the play-offs that seems to be held to each year.
But there has been at least one year ( I think more ) when after the play-offs we have ended up with more than 10 WCs in total.
The maximum 8 is 'just' as far as I can see part of the LTA WC policy but if there are still additional gaps at play-off time some of these have been filled in the past.
Where there is a will from the AELTC / LTA there is a way. It is not really the problem.
Well they normally end up filling them with the play off semi final losers but if it started going down to quarter final losers it would start to get a bit ridiculous. Is that what you are suggesting? What I am saying is they should give out more in the first place.
Not suggesting that no, was just saying that 8 + 2 hadn't been always a final maximum. Though then they probably gave more out initially. Yes, there may or may not be issues of going further back through the play-offs, though maybe not so much for one or two with other arguable strings to their now - e.g. best juniors.
Actually though it needn't have come to that. The real problem here has yes been the initial allication, but not the maximum of 8. As you say they should have awarded more, and they easily could have and still been within the maximum 8 guideline. They awarded 7 for the women and just 5 for the men! 8 awarded for the men initially and there wouldn't need to be any discussion about going back earlier than the SFs in the play-offs or otherwise trying to fill up unused WC places.

Hey guys thanks for the support. Yep Jonny is a bit bamboozled by it all and not a little dispirited at the mo! Why waste a wildcard , not just for him but for any other of the likely candidates. It seems crazy that this is allowed to happen. Its brutally hard to try and make a go at tennis in the UK just now, and a little bit of thought and some help would have gone a long way to at least say " hey we hear you guys" .I've never heard Jonny sound so down today after he gave the grass court season a good go, with as some of you said, some encouraging results, to be basically told tough luck. I hope I'm not being blinded by bias but I can't see any logic in this whatsoever. Not even if I try very very hard! Hey I'm a psychologist I get the survival of the fittest theory but but do we really need to make it any tougher than it already is?

Give Jonny my/our best. It really is tough on him and the logic, is just illogical. If he is still around Roehampton, I'll try and catch up with him tomorrow.
