Give Jonny my/our best. It really is tough on him and the logic, is just illogical. If he is still around Roehampton, I'll try and catch up with him tomorrow.

As said, my view is that they could have given them out on any number of justifications - to youngsters, to next on rankings, to most on form, whatever.

But to not give them out seems just plain spiteful

Dan S and Joe seem to have the best draws.

Overall, the draws seem about average, considering what one might have got.

3 were unused. The beneficiaries were Salvatore Caruso (ITA), Tomas Lipovsek Puches (ARG) and Matthew Barton (AUS).

Lipovsek Puches is most likely a walking bye, he is an out an out clay court player having never played a professional match on grass in his life and only a handful of tournaments on hard court. Caruso is a little more varied but again is primarily a clay court player and has never played a professional match on grass.

I have long been an advocate of "tough love" and a belief that making things too easy for players just leads to lots of Brits with inflated rankings but not good enough to progress. I don't want a futures in Britain each week or lavish funding for young players. I want to see determined young kids out there fighting for every point, I want to see kids out there on the tour who are winners not whiners. But here is the crux, I want to see the powers that be give our youngsters a chance. I don't want things handed to them on a plate but I want to see them given opportunities.

I have said in the past the LTA have never understood that use of both carrot and stick together produce far better results than using either individually. The LTA have often gone from using all carrot to all stick and never a sensible combination. Now in fairness they do seem to have worked out that they can use both at the same time, the only trouble is that they have decided that some players will get all carrot while the rest will get all stick. It is utter madness and I can only repeat that those who are responsible from promoting tennis in this country are failing miserably.

I only hope that when the annoyance and bemusement passes Jonny remembers that he has had a good couple of weeks and that there is no reason why he can't get back out on the tour and continue climbing the rankings.

The lack of using up of qwc is ridiculous. Willis & Cox are both there who for one reason or another have hardly played on tour recently. While others players who have been giving it a go are missing. Surely giving the final qwc to young players gives them an incentive. When they're going into their 3rd week in some tennis backwater playing futures having picked up none or few points the previous weeks, the memory of playing qualifying might be what gives them the extra boost to keep them going.
P.S Not meant to be an attack on either Willis or Cox, I hope they take the opportunity and we see them back on the tour more often.

Wow, just wow! The Brit guys who just missed out will be feeling just great when they see those 3 wildcard choices.

These are not wildcard choices though, but just the three guys who were the next alternates on the entry list and they could have been anyone. The AELTC ( with the LTA's 'help' ) managed to find 6 Q WCs through initial choice ( just 2, the clear next 2 on rankings ) and the play-offs ( last 4 ) and then effectively decided although having 9 Q WCs in their remit they couldn't come up with 3 more players who were worth giving and would usefully benefit from Q WCs so simply abdicated making any further choices.

Arguably bad choices is one thing, by their actions saying there just was noone else something else. And apparently not a 'problem' the other Slams have.

From an article by Paul Newman in today's Standard:

A Wimbledon committee were meeting on Tuesday to decide on their wild cards. An announcement will be made tomorrow [i.e. Wednesday] when Britain's Marcus Willis, who met Federer in the second round last year, will hope for a free pass into the main draw.
