Week 24 - ATP 500 - Aegon Championships, The Queen's Club, London (grass)

Thought Evo played well and showed a good attitude throughout but he squandered his chances. Should have won the first set and then should have broken at 6-5* in the second which would have let him serve first in the second set. Only really has himself to blame for not winning it.

This is the match I am most sad about the loss. I watched much of it, and he fought back so many times when he was behind I really thought he was going to get through this one.

Shame about Evo, but what a win for Kyle.

Ball toss problems or no ball toss problems, Kyle is in a good place, no pressure and a real threat to any player outside the top10. It would be nice to see him make a bit of head way in a 500.

Absolutely, his ranking has been a bit static this year which I realise does happen, so with no major points to defend till the end of July it would be great to see him have a good grass season and really kick on.

L16:  (WC) Kyle Edmund WR 85 "defeated" Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) WR 61 by a walkover  wink

Courtesy of the Beeb's rolling sports news page:

Britain's world number 84 Kyle Edmund has been given a walkover into the quarter-finals of Queen's Club after his scheduled last 16 opponent Paul-Henri Matthieu [withdrew?] with a wrist injury.

This means the all-British encounter between defending champion Andy Murray and Aljaz Bedene has been brought forward to 13:15 BST, weather permitting.

And the winner of that match will face Edmund in the last eight on Friday.

Actually considering Kyle ended last year WR 102 and started this week #52 in the race ( now moved up to the mid 40s ) he has continued to move very much in the right direction.

Overall last year his first half was better with a fall off for whatever reason in the autumn so his ranking rise from WR 102 to WR 85 ( will be going up nearer WR 70 now ) is based on achievements against a pretty good half. And still last year was 339 points until Monday, this year 447 and now plus another 90 ( half by his own good work )

As I said initially, before waffling on a bit, I think that race position shows how well he is truly progressing of late.

And not only has he only 80 Challenger points to come off before the end of July, probably even more relevant for his overall ranking hopefully clearer showing big progress, he has only another 51 ( 35 + 16 ) points to defend before November.

I would hope and expect that he's esconced in the top 50 by then.

British Championship SF :

Andy Murray vs Aljaz Bedene
Kyle Edmund w/o vs Paul Henri Matthieu ( found to be an imposter after eliminating poor Dan Evans )

Andy spends 10 years waiting to play another British player in an ATP event then faces 2 in 2 days (*).... bit like waiting for the bus.

(*) Weather permitting and assuming he does win today.

Why can't the rules allow a beaten player to take the place in the next round if the player that beats them withdraws before the start of that next round? Is it to do with who gets the points/ prize money?

Lucky losers occur between qualifying and the main draw, so why not in the main draw?

I kind of see what you mean. But I look at it that there is more of a clear distinction between qualifying and the main draw and the LLs help us start with a full main draw, but once you lose in the main draw that's it and you should be out with no way back. I can see arguments of it still being a bit inconsistent, but I like it as it is. Just of course a pain when a Brit loses and then the opposition pulls out.

Can't see anything in the points / prize money distribution that couldn't be got round if it was so desired.
