Week 23 - ITF ($50K) - Surbiton, UK Grass

bravo Gabi !

I've seen her play 4 times now, and all on grass

She's so low to the ground, huge knee bend, but balanced and hitting through the ball - it's hardly classic grass tennis but it works really well.

The score was perfectly just - the little Mexican girl (and she IS little - not often Gabi's the 'bigger' girl on court) got going and tried hard. but there was nothing really she could do.

Georgie Axon played a decent match - tried what she could, but the gap was large, and she can't have too many regrets.

NB I don't mean to be personal about Georgie's tennis - I wish her absolutely all the best. And I know she has exams and stuff (as do many of them) so it's not easy.

'deleted line'

Good start from Harriet - nice hitting, positive attitude - shame they had to come off.

edited to get rid of something I'm not 100% sure about

Isn't JTC privately funded coaching? i.e Georgie gets intensive 1 on 1 coaching as it's paid for by someone other than the LTA

If so, then I'm completely wrong.

But I was told that the package she gets is LTA backed.

A lot of our players receive LTA funding for private coaches (even abroad). We don't have the NTC as such any more (or any central academy) so it's almost a given.

However, if it's all personal money, then that's completely different and I apologise to the LTA.

And, as said, it's nothing against her at all, in any way.

Looks like they're back on again.

Emma 0-3 down but no sign of play on Harriet's court

Harriet takes the first set on a tiebreak.

Good stuff. I think Anderson's a good player, and seeded here.

Harriet lost 7-6(3), 1-6, 2-6

There were a couple of lengthy MTOs in the second set, which I'd fear, given the scoreline, were for Harriet. Hopefully nothing too serious.
