I think Dave Rice said publicly last year that if results didn't get better in the next few months, he was quitting to focus on other things (and they didn;t, so I guess he did).
He's also that bit older than the others so it makes more sense too.
So his ranking has fallen off because he hasn't played, not because he's been playing and losing.
This whole coaching thing those presupposes that they are any good at, and enjoy, coaching. And there are jobs. It's far from being a given. At least Jamie Baker threw in the towel to do something completely different (and well paid).
I overheard Josh Milton talking next to me before his 2qr match saying that Cox, Rice & Willis were done. So I assumed that meant on the circuit. Although I think one of them was planning on turning up for Wimbledon WC tournament.
Dont blame them if they can get a good steady income from playing club tennis and some coaching at some point you have to make that decision.

Disappointed if Dan Cox is quiting the circuit Evans was as low as 820 and fought to get his ranking back up I agree Cox and Smethurst too could be top 200 may be they are fed up of the slog. David Rice ranking has fallen off this year I always thought he was a better doubles
The obvious difference is that Evans has always had the potential to be a top 100 player or at the very least good enough to make a living on the challenger tour. With Cox and Smethurst I always thought that 200 or so was probably the highest they could ever go and at that ranking it is almost impossible to make ends meet.
Coxy in particular should have no regrets, he gave everything he had to try and make it as a pro but I think the harsh truth is that he was never quite good enough. Had he been a few inches taller things could well have been different.
Agree that no one has done more to maximise his gifts and talents - and suffered more from just not having those few extra inches - than Dan Cox. A fine player and an example of how to work and to earn respect. The good thing with someone like that is that, rather as with Jamie Baker, you suspect he will succeed in whatever endeavour he takes on at the end of his Tour career, whenever that is.
Like CD, I've always felt that Dan Smethurst has the potential to do quite well indeed, either in singles or in doubles. Still feel that - though can well understand why the prospect of more months on the grind with all the injury issues might make other scenarios quite tempting.
Jonny is now a set and a break up and looking in complete control 6-2 *4-3 - just a case of whether he can hold his nerve with a first Challenger main draw win and a career best ranking scalp on the line. Everything crossed

Yay, super for Jonny. Looks as if the pressure not unnaturally got to him a bit, chucking in his first two DFs of the match at 30-15 and 40-30(MP), but got there
brilliant stuff - approaching low 600's. Fingers crossed Jonny stays injury free, can find some hitting partners and a bit of money to fund him and we definitely have a prospect on our hands.
As with clay, but to a greater degree, rankings go out the window on grass. (not as bad as it used to be with the old 90s grass).
I refuse to get excited by British players winning a few grass challenger or even ATP matches during this period. One word, EATON. That chap he defeated at Wimbledon was about 50-60 in rankings??
Great for this O mara boy, but please prove yourself on the long hard court slog.
