No, not at all !

There was a (very small) sign up on one of the courts/fences. But no announcements, no officiating about it, and the stewards seemingly had no interest in policing the stands.

As said, it's a very laid back place.

 Much more sensible!

Good to hear from Surbiton, although they do need to get a more consistent approach in UK tournaments.

And that should just be about disturbing play, so basically laid back as long as that's not an issue. Courtsiding issues are for the betting companies to sort out ( probably by technology changes ) but not by inconveniencing or asking others to inconvenience ( even put off ) spectators. The almost bully boy descriptions from a previous tournament were alarming.

Look no further, Phil. There is a brief report in today's Times by a journo with whose name I am not at all familiar (Hector Nunns) which, in addition to bearing out Steven's interpretation of yesterday's shenanigans on Court A, reveals that the umpire was one Joshua Brace.  wink  Evo is quoted as saying: "There was a lot of paint on the line and the umpire was shocking and ruined the match for me".  hmm

Copil really has become a GB heart breaker this week (4 wins against Brits in a row now) and he's remarkably effective on grass relative to his ranking - surprisingly so given that he's Romanian! Still, I'm sure Dan could have beaten him despite the odd dodgy call if he hadn't let the bad calls, etc, get into his head, and giving away a service game for free when you're playing someone who's serving so well can never be a good idea.

For the record, he beat Tobias Kamke (WR 141 & a CH of 64 from January 2011) by 6-4 2-6 6-3 to reach the semi-final this morning.

 Cheers for the information.

Utterly shambolic scheduling at Surbiton yesterday. Even though there was rain around they tried to play the 2 women's and 2 men's Semi finals back to back on the same court. The result was that Copil and Fratangelo only played 3 games of their SF before the rain came and they now face playing their SF today and the winner of that playing the final later on, if it stops raining of course. This is the complete opposite of the Queen's scheduling, the right original schedule but an obdurate refusal to apply common sense to ensure that the matches were completed.

Hey puts Surbiton right up with my memories of the US Open ( year Andy lost the final to Fed ) with the SFs.

Just about everyone knew the remnants of a hurricane were on their way ( the spectators came armed with spare kit for Armegeddon ), but hey let's still leave Andy and Rafa to follow as second semi.

Then very belatedly, well into the first semi, the authorities got some strange inkling about rain maybe coming and moved Andy vs Rafa. They got two and a half sets in before it err got a bit wet.

Result : carried into Sunday, and another US Open Final Monday.

The US Open schedulers are great to follow in what not to do and how not to react or err unreact.

Meanwhile, playing inside, Brit-basher Copil has just taken the first set quite easily against fourth seed, Frat.

Good of Surbiton to arrange livestream even for the change of court to indoors though.

Annoying for Neal and Smethers to lose in qualis to the guy who shouldn't be there - who then goes on to make the final.

Well done to Copil though - he's got a game that's easy on the eye.

In my view a rule change is long overdue. If you are high enough ranked to have made the main draw (based on the original cut off) you shouldn't be allowed to sign in for qualifying.

Yes, absolutely.

It's been said on here thousands of times (Bob will join in, loudly).

The event can still give you a main draw wildcard, if they see fit. So there would still be some flexibility.

He sure will.  Although you have all said what I feel anyway.

I think it was posted recently that he is having a rest after making it to the last 4 of the US college finals.
