gutted for liam after he came so close. Looks to be playing quite well ready for me to hopefully see him in Ilkley next week. Would love to see him win a match like the two he played here.
Slight change of subject but I see that Evo has entered the ATP 500 event in Washington that is played 2 weeks after Wimbledon. With the Olympics causing a compressed schedule there are 4 tournaments that week (250s on clay in Gstaad, Kitzbuhel and Umag) so the entry list isn't as strong as normal hence Evo's ranking was good enough to get him in directly. Nice to see some positive scheduling.

I noticed that too. On the other hand, Aljaz, who prefers the clay entered Umag and may well be kicking himself. The fields in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, also clay events, are so weak he would probably have been one of the top 4 seeds at either location but finds himself 10th on the entry list in Umag.

I am pretty sure that the players get to see other entrants to tournaments before the deadline so Aljaz would have had a good idea of the relative strengths of the 3 tournaments. I assume it is a combination of Umag being fairly close to his place of birth and loyalty to the tournament/past positive experiences having played there for the last 5 years (he made the QF in 2013).
You are right I am sure RJA, from an armchair perspective it is easy to say choose the tournament with the weakest field but the players weigh a lot more than that when making their decisions. I have Aljaz at 31 in my end of year predictions though and I don't think he is giving that fact enough consideration in the choices he is making.
Aljaz may not fancy playing at altitude - the ball will fly considerably more quickly. And talking of balls, I don't think they use normal ones - they would be too hard in the lower atmospheric pressure.
I wonder what Dan will do the week after Washington - will he have a crack at qualies in Toronto or will it be the challenger in Lexington?
No I am with RJA he just wants to spend some time at home (in the loosest sense of the word). Umag is on the border with Italy and adjacent to Slovenia, indeed the easiest access by air is through the adjacent countries.
