Wow!

Wonderful efforts from Katie & Tara.
Shame it's only for +4 points, as both seem more worthy results than that, but, in with a shot at the main draw.

Well done ladies!

She won 7-5, 7-6(5). Should now move up to around WR600, and GB14.

Very good day, with both lasses through to FQR.

Katie plays the top qualies seed, but she's Chinese, and there are now hordes of Chinese who have very flattering rankings, which don't hold up that well when they're playing away from valuable ITFs in China with 90% local fields.

Tara v Aoyama.

Great stuff Katie. Stayed strong after the collapse from 5-2 up.

Tough FQR matches but winnable for both.

Could be all over now.

Great to see another brit who can get into a winning position and then let it go.

I'm really not sure British payers have any particular relative propensity for that, and they're also probably I reckon relatively as good at finally getting it won or turning it round. So not unusual, particularly in the general women's game. British supporters though may have a relative propensity for thinking otherwise.

Well done, Tara and Katie

Katie got mighty tight at the end of that match, but great to see her get over the line. She really does have game, but just got to find more consistency.

I thought that Phil had announced that Naomi and Heather were teaming up over the grass season? It didn't last long!!!

I did, Naomi told me last week, I'm just assuming Hev only wanted to play singles this week.

Hev's mum looks like she's on coaching duties this week, and isn't a bad tennis player herself.

The last DA to the doubles main draw (as shown on the WTA dawsheet) was DAVIS/McHALE - 306, who have the same combined ranking as Tara and Connie (157+149), so I looked at the WTA rulebook for the tiebreaker, which says

Entry cutoffs and seeding will be determined by the highest combined ranking of the teams entered. If teams are tied, the tie-break procedure will be in the following order:

(a) Team with the greatest combined total points;

Davis and McHale have 333+683=1016 points, more than Tara and Connie with 444+473=917

Bah, I guessed that Taco had been edged out but didn't imagine sooo close  Great that Tara has though already compensated by doing so well in singes, pity for Conny.

I really do hope that such a close miss doesn't adversely effect the chances of seeing Taco at Wimbledon. Say another 60 points for a R1 win wouldn't have done any harm

Zhang has almost exclusively played in east this year, and although she did win two rounds of qualies at the AO, nothing in her results suggests Katie doesn't have a chance here.
