Week 23 - WTA International ($250K) - Nottingham, UK - Grass

Given we have no other player ranked between 100 and 250 there can't really be any other contender for a WC. I really hope Laura is made to come through qualifying.

But the AELTC's duty is towards its public and its tournament, not the state of tennis, or what's best for Laura in the long run.

So they will give her a WC because lots of the crowd, and the TV, and the press, will want to see her, and talk about her.

As such, they're right.

But the mega congrats go to Tara - what a few weeks - rather like Joko's sudden 'déclic', as the French would say - it all suddenly coming together.

Really brilliant.

Yeah I don't quite get the quasi-hostility she's getting. She's taking a frustratingly long time to get back to her old form, but she's still better than most of the others who would be rivals for a wildcard and had a decent enough career pre-injury to merit special treatment when she comes back.

While, in current form, maindraw wins are an outside bet for Laura, can we really say anything different for anyone else in the frame? Even Tara in current form would be an underdog against most of the draw.

Well that was a big disappointment, Tara would have played Zheng off the park, if she could have repeated the McHale performance. I suspect she was tight. Hopefully her confidence won't be hit, because it truly has been a remarkable couple of weeks. I don't think the injury is a big one, couple of days rest should be enough hopefully. Have to say I wish she'd used the slice more because it was generating a lot of errors from her opponent, but basically the forehand was a 6/10 today, when it had been a 10/10 last match. Zheng to her credit, is really quick around the court, and didn't miss much.
