I'm not party to her training routine, but I think she's be doing better if she was up at 6 every morning to take the dogs for a 2 mile run. And/or putting in 3/4 hours of semi-competitive practice tennis per day against a decent hitting partner.
If she wants to make it back to the top, she could do worse than to start angling for an invite to join Andy in Florida in December.
But there's training fit and match fit. You might regularly run miles, lift weights, hit shots for hours on the practice court, but still look slow in a match. If you're not reading the game well, constructing your points in the way that's best going to trouble your opponent, you're just going to look flat footed half the time and your opponent's confidence is going to soar as yours dips. And those skills only get better through lots of live match time. No way of knowing of course how fit Laura is off the match court but someone posted that she looked really good in practice this week.
Laura needs to drop to a month of 25ks I think to get match fit. She is currently playing at her current ranking so makes sense. I think I'd be right in saying that if she won a title at this level it would be her highest to date.
Hmm, Jo broke immediately but was broken back. She leads 3-2*

Just recovered a break in set 2.
But, Jo is a front runner, not hopeful coming from behind.
In the last 52 weeks, Jo is 3-13 when losing the first set; which is line with her career percentage, 19%.
She's also not playing well. There's not really much purpose to most of what's happening. Zheng is her usual bundle of energy, and you can see she's well up for the upset here.
The Pliskovas got rid of the 3rd seeds far easier than they did Freya+Laura.
Considering that Karo is top 20 singles, top 30 doubles, and that the twins have played together for getting towards 2 decades, whereas Freya+Laura were a scratch pair, seems to me that F+L posted a really excellent score.
