Top section of the draw has just opened up dramaticaly as the Nº1 seed hands a W/O to his opponent. Wonder if that means there has been a withdrawal from the MD and he has been bumped up. Sadly though, there are no Brits left in that section.

Was just about to post "Bradley "Jammy" Mousley:  gets a walkover against the q1, Adrián Menéndez  disbelief !" & comment on the opening-up of the draw, but I see you beat me to it, Bob. wink

I see Menéndez is in the main draw as an ALT.

Dan S has taken the 1st set against Bossel 6-4 but has just gone a break down in the 2nd at 1-2*

Josh S is into a deciding set against the 3rd seed Moriya. Top effort so far. Would love to see him pull this one off.

Bossel came back to beat Dan S 4-6 6-2 6-4

Meanwhile it's squeaky culo time for Josh S as he enters a 3rd set breaker. Vamos.

That's got to hurt. Josh S loses 9-7 in the 3rd set breaker to a guy who was Top 150 this time last year.

Hope though that it really encourages Josh. Plenty of time yet for the young man to come through.

Bambo lost a 1st set TB but has fought back to win the 2nd 6-2. And he has broken early in the decider to lead *2-0

Bambo holds for 3-0, at which point his opponent retires. Bambo will play Bossel for a place in the MD.

initial reaction : absolutely gutted to see this

second reaction (a split second later): what a brilliant match/score - SO SO pleased to see Josh playing at such a high level - his game is mega on grass - and after the injuries he's had.....just great to see him being SO close to getting an amazing win.

Only sore point: I am still, and always, against the GB insistence on playing two matches in a day, especially as the seeds all get a BYE - I know other tournaments do it too - but very few - compared to Britain which seems to schedule it that way all the time. And given Josh had played three big sets this morning, doing the same again a couple of hours later is not easy.

But the takeaway is still hyper positive. And glad to see he sees it the same way:

Josh: "Ah guys. Tough one. I lost 6-2 3-6 6-7(7). What a battle! Absolutely chuffed with my performance and was so unlucky not to have pulled through as I did have a match point in the tie break which hurts quite a bit. Would've been my biggest win in my career so far, however it just wasn't meant to be today. I'll keep going "

Seems like the lad has a good attitude. Must be heart-breaking to come that close, but very encouraging nonetheless.

On the subject of scheduling it almost always works like this when you have a challenger during week 2 of a slam. The reason is that they start qualifying on the Sunday as this is fair to all players competing in the slam as anybody that loses in the 3rd round of the slam can still play a challenger the following week (slam R3 are played Fri-Sat). With a Sunday start you really need to have qualifying done in 2 days, hence two matches in one day. The other two challengers plated this week (Furth and Prostejov) have followed the same schedule.

As for Josh, I am really pleased for him to put in such a good performance and I really hope that he can build on it. I haven't seem him play for a while but I really hope he can calm down on court as I think it would benefit his game immensely. I understand that his injury problems have caused severe frustration but whenever I have seen him play he was so intense and so wound up on court that it was a serious detriment to his game.
