Two big points for Alex Ward to break third set, at 30-30 good defence then chased down a drop shot and hit a winner and then a smooth down the line backhand winner to break.
Have to say Alex has improved massively from last year, that was a very tough 1st set to lose, and yet it didn't phase him at all, gutted I missed the end of the match, but by all accounts he won it in impressive fashion. Had a brief chat with Alex just before his match about which parts of his game have improved the most, and he felt all aspects had improved a little, and I'd fully concur with that view, but strength of mind maybe the one thing that's improved the most. Alex is heading comfortably into the top 200 on this form.
A bit of a shame that the Wards matches clashed, but Phil and I watched Alex and he was outstanding.
His serve seems to have a bit more on it. He played from the baseline mainly and his groundstrokes were excellent with very consistent depth of shot, good defence and good mental strength.
Very impressed with the amount of winners he hit, both cross court and down the line and there is definitely a big improvement in his ranking to come if he can maintain these levels.
Hope he gets a go on centre tomorrow. He deserves it.
