Week 21 - ITF($25k) Karuizawa, Japan (Grass)

I put 'battle' in inverted commas because I'm not sure there is a conscious battle as such among players for GB #4, certainly when it's in its current WR territory.

However, just seeing other Brits do well and advancing up the world rankings may I think help some push on themselves. If they can do it ...

No joy for Katy, but a reasonable trip with a few points to bring back.

A little disappointing, but considering she has been fighting to stay upright all week alongside trying to win matches she's done well.

She's taken a reasonable haul of wins and points away from her block in Japan. I'm curious to see how she schedules tournaments over the grass seasons and if she gets any WCs at any of the WTA events.

I think I'm right in saying Katy played all the 50k's and Nottingham as a WC last year and played Birmingham(before it was a premier) the year before and qualified before getting that bad leg injury.

She also won a round in Wimbledon qualifiers, losing to Hogenkamp, who went on to reach R2 MD.

I get the feeling Katy is just about to have a big breakthrough.

Maybe it will be on the grass back at home.
