Boys: 52nd Astrid Bowl Charleroi, Belgian International Junior Championships, clay - Grade 1 (Week 21)

Although the draw isn't on ITF at present this Grade 1 tournament starts tomorrow with Jay Clarke and Ryan Storrie expected amongst the top 8 seeds. The tournament may have more significance for Alexis Canter though, as a good run in singles or doubles could earn him a Special Exempt for Roland Garros (he could get in alternatively if there are a couple of withdrawals and the Special Exempts are unclaimed). Ewan Moore should also be in the draw, whilst Victoria Subev did well to reach final qualifying. Live scores should be available via http://www.tennisticker.de/bel/sb.html?tournid=2825

The draw has come up.

Ryan, Jay and Alexis all have a BYE in R1.

Ewan plays a Brazilian qualifier

Young Vicki Subev (age 13) lost out in the FQR.

Some tricky round 2s, particularly for Jay who tackles a Russian who won his last tournament (G2) and pushed Ryan to a final set tiebreak at the Yeltsin Cup G1

R1

(Q) Thiago Seyboth Wild (BRA) d. Ewan Moore 7-5 3-6 6-3

R2

Oliver Crawford (USA) v (7) Ryan James Storrie
Seppe Cuypers (BEL) v (16) Alexis Canter
Mikhail Sokolovskiy (RUS) v (3) Jay Clarke

Two nice wins for Ryan and Jay (particularly Jay, given DavidC's comments above).

Alexis lost easily though.

R2

(7) Ryan James Storrie def. Oliver Crawford (USA) 6-1 6-2

Seppe Cuypers (BEL) def . (16) Alexis Canter 6-3 6-0

(3) Jay Clarke def. Mikhail Sokolovskiy (RUS) 6-1 6-3

Alexis is currently on court playing doubles - into a match tiebreak. A second successive heavy defeat on European clay won't help his confidence for RG qualifying though.

R3

(10) Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves v (7) Ryan James Storrie
(13) Brandon Holt v (3) Jay Clarke

Consolation for Alexis in the doubles. Jay (very encouraging singles win earlier) is now on court in doubles

Nice win for Ryan Storrie today against his s doubles partner 7-5 6-2, Stroke of luck for Jay who got a walkover into the quarters where he'll meet a tough opponent in his doubles partner Benjamin Sigouin

Jay and Ryan face off in the doubles guaranteeing a finalist. Ryan progressed to this stage by defeating Alexis & partner, thus ending his slim chances of a Special Exempt into Roland Garros. On this week's rankings Benjamin has overtaken Jay to move into the top 20

QF

(15) Juan Carlos Manuel Aguilar (BOL) v (7) Ryan James Storrie
(6) Benjamin Sigouin (CAN) v (3) Jay Clarke

Doubles SF

(1) Clarke/Sigouin (GBR/CAN) v (3) Meligeni Rodrigues Alves / Storrie (BRA/GBR)

Another good win for Ryan, but Jay just misses out in a 3 setter.

Both boys should see increases in ranking points after this event.

Pity for Jay, but good to see Ryan at least match his SF from here last year. Jay and Ryan continue as the vanguard of our junior boys. Hopefully they can have good junior Slams and seriously begin the difficult transition into seniors later in the year.

At least we see from Yasmin that Jay plans to mix up seniors and juniors and has already had some success

Ryan is slightly older, but doesn't seem to be playing that mix yet, which is a little worrying.
