Despite a few BPs, Naomi forced to serve to stay in the match...and do so to love.

Coco Vandeweghe USA 6-4 3-6 *5-3 Naomi Broady GBR

Absymal match, by the way.

Coco wins 6-4, 3-6, 6-3

I agree that the standard wasn't high. I think that with a bit more Slam experience, and practice on clay, Naomi could have had that. A good effort, against the WR42, on a surface that doesn't suit.

Fair play to Naomi. She dug in and got into a good position but wasn't really playing well enough overall to hold on. Frustrating not to break back at 2_4* though

But for her to even be in that position against a top 50 player in a grand slam on clay shows her progress.

Grass could be very exciting

Agree with that.

Coco looked a reasonable player having a bad day, while Naomi looked a very poor player, especially in terms of her ground-strokes. She landed a few decent returns but the rallies were just awful. Drop shots and lobs were surprisingly good.

Not sure about the tactics either. High number of body serves. Far too many forehand rallies despite Coco's forehand looking the best shot on display, while her backhand produced more unforced errors and far fewer winners.

Ah, well, at least her interviews are fan-bloody-tastic...

www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/may/22/naomi-broady-french-open-loftier-dreams-heather-watson

Tomorrow's OOP has Laura 4th on 2, Jo 4th on 14; so both may not even play, dependent on weather.

Surely no one was expecting a high quality match between two players who like fast surfaces on a cold windy night on clay?

Thought Naomi's fight was excellent, when she lost serve at the start of the 2nd set I thought she was going to lose very easily, so to take it to a third was a great effort. She has certainly had a much better clay court season than I thought she would.

Thanks for the link wimbledont, a great interview.

Think the weather is supposed to be better tomorrow so Laura and Jo should both play.

Hev at her best, just a shame she has to play one of the inform players on the WTA tour, would strongly fancy her in most other match ups. Good battle by Naomi, unfortunately due to a Brit fest neither Eurosport or Itv were showing her match so can't comment about her level of play.

Hopefully Jo and Laura won't clash tomorrow!

Hev looked very good today. She was concentrating on the win for Olympic qualification, but it also gets her to another milestone $2M career earnings.

Didn't see Naomi's match due to clash with Kyle and Andy but even a few months ago to think she would win a set here would seem far fetched.

Just to clarify, I was saying the match was abysmal from a viewer's perspective, rather than saying Naomi specifically was bad...it never had any rhythm and both players looked *very* ill-at-ease on clay. Though that was, as others have pointed out, to be expected.

Wasn't expecting a win for Naomi, frankly, so encouraged that she took it so close; maybe she'll win a round next year :)

For ease of checking: www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/scores/schedule/schedule9.html Bedene first on today. Murray second on. Joko last on on Bedene's court and Laura last on on her court.
