Week 20 - Roland Garros Qualifications

I generally try and steer clear of such proclamations but the grass season is, I believe, make or break for James. If he fails to defend any of his points from last year, I struggle to see him arresting the slide. Hope I'm wrong

James is done. When he's taken his grass season windfall, he should retire. Shame, but there are better people to invest in now

Well other things to consider is the finance.  If he has to drop down to lower challengers and futures, it will be hard to make a decent living and may have to start eating into his assets.

He has earned over a million dollars in prize, money, very good to say he was never really a top 100 player, he should retire and go and enjoy life.

Has anyone stopped to think that James Ward still enjoys playing tennis

Good to see Klein back on court. Competitive on clay v quality opponent!

Exactly. Well said.

Why he should 'go away and enjoy life' V?

That might be exactly what he's doing right now.

The guy's not even 30 yet.

Stakovskys first tournament this year on clay about 60hrs after he has won a challenger on hard at the other side of the world. I'd say he was lucky to be playing Brydan who won't be match fit.

While I'm here having been at Roland Garros last year I'd have to say I prefer it to Wimbledon. Australian Open still my favourite and I'm off to the US Open next year to complete the set. Wimbledon least favourite for a number of reasons, grass isn't the best surface, the crowd get up my nose too many Tory types. The contrast between Melbourne and SW19 is amazing couldn't be any different. Aussies more fun for sure.

Been to Wimbledon on numerous occasions I love the atmosphere on the first day can't go this year unfortunately! Agree it can be snobby but just cause somebody's posh or public school types that doesn't mean they are Tory probably the opposite!

Disappointing results, but not altogether surprising.

I would say the problem is that there is little indication at the moment that James does enjoy playing tennis. Pretty much every time I have seen him play this season he has been devoid of energy or passion. He has moped around the court looking largely uninterested and almost waiting for the inevitable defeat.

Not that this means I think he should retire, such a decision is obviously up to him. The LTA aren't funding him so it isn't like he has obligations to anybody other than himself.

 Completely missed the point.

If he keeps going out in 1st/second round of challengers, that is not going to be enough money to get by on, and he will have to start to dip into his prize money. So essentially it is like gambling.  Frank Dancevic is a futures players now.

Not at all missing the point.

What other qualifications does he have? How can he earn a living otherwise? And at what paygrade?

His Wimbly and Queens wildcard etc. (as well as some earnings) will give him plenty to live on for the year.

The world is full of people barely scraping by. Every waiter, in every cafe/restaurant in London, that I see every day, is doing that. Not to mention the nurses and countless other professions. If James wishes to scrape by via tennis because he enjoys it, then that's a reasonable choice for someone with no kids, nor huge commitments.

Agreed with one point you made.  Everyone one in London scrapes by in the that over priced slum that is the capital.

I think you are wrong again.

A waiter can just get by in London, but on the futures tour it is hard to even do that without lta funding. If it were a choice between, having a jolly playing tennis still, funded by my hard earned savings or searching for the next step in life, I know which I would choose.....

Just because you would choose differently doesn't make the other person wrong.

James DOES have funding (i.e. indirect, thanks to wildcards) so he is not like a futures player (yet). Although he may be, of course, in a year's time. In which case, he can review the situation.

However, at the moment, the plus side to his choice (let's assume) to carry on is that he has potential upside (if he gets a round at Wimbly he earns a very nice 40k or so). Which is completely different from the poor waiters/nurses.

As a trader, his choice makes perfect sense. Limit the downside and stay where the potential upside is significant.
