Jay Clarke, Ryan Storrie, Alexis Canter, Katie Swan and Emily Appleton have all made the main draw of this strong GA, but Alastair Gray and Ewan Moore need to negotiate qualifying. Alastair is top seed and has a bye in QR1. Ewan claimed an opening victory 6-2 6-0 this morning over an Italian but needs two more to qualify. Lucas Koelle of Brazil (JWR 69) is the other seed in his section while American Trent Bryde (JWR) is seeded in Alastair's section
Disappointing loss for Alastair against an Italian with modest ITF record. Live scores are at www.tennisticker.de/ita/sb.html Ewan is up an early double break (4*-1) in his second qualifier
This could be a big tournament for Katie in her bid to win the French Open. She currently has the number 8 seed for Roland Garros, but has a runner up position in doubles to defend here from last year and could do with a reasonable run in singles (lowest score is a 60 which can be improved on from R16 onwards).
Ewan lost a long match so there will be just the 5 Brits in the main draw starting tomorrow. Alexis has a very tough draw against a star young player referred to in a previous Spanish G1 thread (where he beat Jay en route to the title). Emily draws a fast rising 14 year old American.
Boys R1 (L64)
Alexis Canter v Nicola Kuhn (ESP)
Q/LL v (11) Jay Clarke
Juan Martin Jalif (ARG) v Ryan James Storrie
Girls R1 (L64)
Caty McNally (USA) v Emily Appleton
Q/LL v (4) Katie Swan
Caty's mum, Lynn Nabor, was a professional player and last year was the USTA 'Team USA' development coach of the year so I suspect Emily has a tough opponent.
Yes, but that's not a direct benefit to Jay, Ryan, Alexis etc. i.e. much as they want others to do well too, one can't expect them to be motivated by what would be best for the rest.
The American who ousted Ewan in qualifying has ended up as Jay's opponent. Jay and his Greek partner only lost one game in their doubles today.
