Week 20 - ATP 250 - Open de Nice, France (clay)

QR1: (q4) Kyle Edmund WR 82 v (WC) Elliot Benchetrit (FRA) WR 1974 (=CH) 17 y/o

If it goes with seeding, Kyle will play Cecchinato in the FQR.

And thinking positively, the 4 qualifier slots are

Pella

Fognini

Verdasco

Zverev (Alex)

Elliot B (WR 1974, JWR 33) won the G1 in Morocco last week (week before?), hammering Alastair Gray, and partnered Ryan in the dubs.

He'll get thrashed by Kyle but it's a sign of FFT wildcard policy that they're giving him a Q WC into an acutal ATP event.

I think, Bob, that Fognini has a MD wildcard so he won't be needing that quali spot (haven't checked the draw - just looking at the French tweets)

Other wildcards to Anderson and Halys (one Frenchman, two 'peskies' - the FFT must be getting soft in its old age !).

ADD: GOT IT ALL WRONG - MISREAD YOUR POST, BOB - IGNORE ME ! (well, apart from the pesky line, which still holds good..... confusedCD.com)

Not the best looking qualifier spots for an ATP 250 I've ever seen.

Just woke up to see that young Master Benchetrit is putting up more of a fight than was maybe expected. Kyle currently leading 3-1* in the deciding set.

Kyle lost his first TB for a whle in the first set after winning 7 in a row.

Double break up now in the final set so some order being brought to the proceedings.

6-7 6-4 *4-1

Benchetrit gets one of the breaks back as Kyle served for the match,

Kyle at 5-3*

98 points each in the match so far.

Broken to 15 serving for the match, that's the potential value of double breaks.

5-3*

*5-4.

Total points 99-102

I don't generally take too much notice of total points, tennis is about games and sets. Still ...

Kyle wins 6-7(3) 6-4 6-4 ( points 103-104 )

I hope that was rather more about the young(er) man rising to the occasion than Kyle well below par. Very possibly a bit of both. Anyway Kyle won more sets

Yes, that wasn't quite the 'trashing' I'd expected...... :(

But, as you say Indy, without seeing it, that's one of the benefits/risks-to-the-others of giving a young gun a wildcard to a top event - they've absolutely nothing to lose and all to prove, and often play out of their skin, for at least a bit.

One way of looking at it might be that Elliot only managed to beat Ryan by 7-5 in the third set only a few weeks ago - so maybe Ryan would do as well in an ATP event too

I think also the much better player, probably approaches the match with a much lower level of mental focus/intensity knowing the ability of his opponent, keeping something in the tank for future matches. Kyle will without doubt be a different proposition tomorrow.

And there's another explanation, hopefully won't him hinder him unduly.
