An incredible, almost unbelievable result from Mandy. Every time I looked she seemed to be down and out - last the first set easily, then after recovering in the second, was 0-4 down in the third. Somehow recovered, but then had the two match points against her, recovered and promptly broke.
At the end of the match noted that Golubic threw her racket (after checking she wasn't going to hit a ballboy), which was the second time I've seen this week Mandy's opponent throw their racket at the end of the match. Perhaps they should get more used to Mandy winning matches. Really fantastic to see Mandy after so long and her almost one year out through injury finally break into the 200s. Her game does look better now with a lovely forehand, and hope she can continue to make some progress now. Realistically though, I guess for her to hold around where she is now for a while would be achievement enough in itself. Wonder how this might effect her forthcoming schedule, including the grass season, especially as she is now GB #4? In the UK no-one's paid her much attention before, wonder if heads may be turned a little further now? Will be interesting to see.
Pleasing to see another British player produce some career best form.
As for a Wimbledon wlidcard, why not? She is the highest ranked Brit not in by direct entry now, and it would be nice to see a player who has represented GB outside of the spotlight for several years get her day in the sun.
Oh, well done I guess too on taking out WR 134, reaching the SF, earning another 41 points at least, on top of her very recent 31, and going to a new CH in the 200s, having started May in the 400s.
Yes. What is quite funny, in a way, is that I remember reading 9-12 months back that her next ambition was to make top 250. With making the Q draw of Roland Garros as the aim.
And over the last 12 months she's played all those 10ks, not had a lot of success, a few niggles with injuries but nothing that's kept her out more than a month, and it's just not happened.
So she was miles off the 250 mark and the Q cut.
And suddenly, in the space of a few weeks, she blasts through and is practically there !
I note that Mandy's opponent tomorrow, Irina Khromacheva, has not only just reached her own CH, but reached the #1 junior ranking position in 2010. She is of course still 15 places lower than today's opponent, Golubic.
Mandy has a great service action. She's just too short.
She has very good groundstrokes off both wings, and the sliced backhand caused the taller girl problems here, which would be magnified on grass.
She's on at 1pm UK tomorrow. Opponent Ms K was Junior 1, and picked by Russia for the Fed Cup final, aged 17. Four 25k tournament wins in the last 12 months have helped her resume her stalled ascent up the rankings.
Ten wins for the price of one: the extra 24 points at stake tomorrow would equate to 2 tournament wins at 10k level, or ten consecutive match wins over a fortnight. This will mean more extra points are at stake than in any of her previous career matches.
For the second consecutive tournament, Amanda has bettered her best previous week's ranking points haul, over the last decade.
Points counting towards RG 2017 updated...
Watson 110 and out
Konta 106 and out
Carreras 72 (+24?) (+40?)
Robson 41 and out
Broady 40 and out
Amanda has done brilliantly after a poor start to the year. She had a months break - I don't what she did, but it's certainly worked.
All the best tomorrow
Yes totally agree great result for Amanda. Sorry to spoil the good news but I can't see her getting WCMD for Wimbledon with a ranking of 284, I think a QWC is more relevant
Though by ranking, it's also hard to justify the likely wildcard for Laura? Particularly as, of the 120 points that make up her score, about 55 are 'loser's consolation prizes', and a further 30 from her only MD win, against an unranked Morrocan youngster who has never won one of her dozen previous tennis matches, even in ITFs.
If Amanda, with a recent W:L record of 11:1 is rejected in favour of Laura, who is closer to 1:11, then we get very close to the point that the LTA can no longer really be considered a sporting association which encourages and promotes sporting competition and recognises and rewards success on the field of play, but a sports marketing agency which subcontracts a minor role from IMG for one month of the year. And we've nearly got there.
