Week 19 - WTA Premier 5 ($2.1M) - Rome, Italy - Clay

Naomi not quite yet the new 'Queen of Clay' then.
40 points from the last two weeks, and £5,750, is very useful and almost certainly ahead of expectations.

Exceptional effort by Naomi, improving every week. BTW I thought hard court was McHales preferred surface, but nonetheless this was possibly Naomi's best performance of the year.

Her improvement since losing 2-6 0-6 to Madison Brengle in Prague has been spectacular, though I imagine the hotter weather helped.

In this match, Naomi's 2nd serve was far more vulnerable than against Dodin, Puig and Saisai Zheng. Naomi won her first three 2nd serve points then 6/20. Seemed to do well in return games in the 2nd set but not so good in the 1st and 3rd sets.

Her stated preferred surface is hard courts.
Her best surface however, has proven thus far to be clay.
Grass 14-15 (48%)
Hard 125-120 (51%)
Clay 68-45 (60%)

Hope for a favourable draw in Paris, a win, and that will be a great reserve of scores to draw on if needed, and have from what would have been projected as an almost entirely points free stretch at the start of the year.

If you go to the WTA site and click Scores & Stats then live Scoreboard, WTA Rome, Live Draws, Qualifying, it has a linking line between Heather and Georges which made me think they were due to play each other. Of course if you go instead to the draw - which always takes eons to be updated, it shows only two rounds of qualifying - Very confusing.

Here's how we solve the problem, there are 8 qualifying slots in the main draw, and after Q2 8 people are through, so no further qualifying rounds need take place.

That linking line in the app for the final round of qualies drives me crazy. I've probably spent a day of my life by now double, taking, and double checking
I always check the official draw sheets now, to preserve (what little is left of) my sanity; much clearer.

Otherwise, minor niggles aside, the app is great, and thinking back to the old days before it arrived, I'm very thankful to have it.

Errani's not the force of old, but it's still clay.

Any chance of a lucky loser slot for Naomi?

Slim. I think she's 6th in line.
