Our girls always beat Vinci in Rome in straight sets on clay. It was Jo's turn, after Heather in 2015.
If, when I had joined this board, someone had said that by 2016 it would be possible to write a sentence like that, I'm not sure it would have felt wholly credible. Not that there weren't GB women doing well ... but they weren't beating top 10 players on clay "at home". Well done, Ms Watson and Ms Konta.

Misaki Doi plays very well (FH DTL particularly good), to knock out 10th seed, and recent title winner on the clay of Prague, Safarova; and thus is Jo's next opponent.
R2: (Q) Heather WATSON (GBR) 55 lost to Barbora STRYCOVA (CZE) 36 4-6 2-6
R2: Johanna KONTA (GBR) 23 defeated Roberta VINCI (ITA) [7] 7 6-0 6-4
R3: Johanna KONTA (GBR) 23 vs. Misaki DOI (JPN) 45 (CH 43 04/2016)
H2H 3-0
2015 Indian Wells, CA, USA - Premier Mandatory - Hard - MD [q10] - QR1, JK won 6-4 6-2
2013 Nottingham, UK - ITF $75K - Grass - JK (WC), MD [5] - R16, JK won 6-7(3) 6-2 7-6(4)
2012 Lexington, KY USA - ITF $50K - Hard - MD [4] - SF, JK won 3-6 7-5 6-1 (that was an amazing match in a truly amazing tournament from Jo)
Yes, I wasn't meaning to rain on Jo's parade. I agree with someone above, that the first set was the best set I've ever seen from a British woman. She could beat Serena playing like that, on one of Serena's better days.
To have a go at a new CH win (WR1), she have to wait at least until the SFs, as she's run out of seeds in this quarter of the draw. Next up is Doi, then Kasatkina v Begu.
Winning those two matches should see her seeded in the top 17 minus Pennetta for Roland Garros, and rebooked for a trip to Singapore at the end the season. Winning the first against Doi will take her to a new (provisional) career high @ WR20.
Amazingly, that was just Jo's second ever WTA MD win on clay! She didn't have ANY before this week!
Quite some statement, and already exceeding my expectations for the clay season.
Jo 'in running' is back equal to her CH 21 and will pass Sloane Stephens if she wins her L16 match.
With about 95% confidence, if Madison Keys loses tonight, then Jo will definitely be Top 20 at the start of Roland Garros, even if she (Jo) loses tomorrow.
Ivanovic has 780 points from SF in Paris last year, which she cannot now make up, even were she to request a late WC to play next week, and win the event, it wouldn't bridge the gap.
The doubt is if either Kasatkina or Strycova win the title in Rome - not likely, but entirely possible, because...
It's been another crazy day on the WTA. Halep. Out Kerber. Out Azarenka. Out Safarova. Out Vinci. Out ( ) Ivanovic. Out
If either Williams also falls this evening, it'll be yet more carnage. This is happening with some regularity. Certainly keeps things interesting!
Edit: It did indeed continue. To the list above, the evening session added the following casualties: Kvitova. Out Venus. Out
There are real opportunities opening up here for lots of less storied players to get big points hauls.

One Italian seems to be having a good week. Got to congratulate Flavia Pennetta on the effortless way that she has climbed 3 places in the live rankings back into the top 10
