Week 18 - ITF ($10K) - Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt Hard

And Sam and partner take the doubles too, 2-6 6-0 10-4, beating the no. 4 seeds.

Into the semis.

Eden not strong enough yet 3-6 2-6

There wasn't that much evidence to suggest she would win this even pre injury. Ability wise circa 600-700 rankings then, it would take a big improvement to even have had a chance today.

If she was at her best I'd have expected a closer result. A year ago, just before injury, she set a CH of 626 and also a CB win against WR267. So beating 512 wouldn't be too unrealistic.

Best of luck to Eden and Sam with their come-backs smile

yes, Strongbow, but Noppawan has a CH of WR 149 and a far better CB.

I'm a fan of Eden but she was only just beginning to break through from being a WR 1000 player to a WR 600 sort of player - it was certainly not her 'confirmed' level. It's all very well saying if Eden had been at her best, but if Noppawan had been at her best, it would have been a far harsher score.

I'm with Jaggy. In fact, I thought it was a very decent score from Eden.

indeed, all the best to Eden and she was progressing well at the time of her injury, but that would not have been a really unexpected scoreline at that time. It is very early to get any real idea of where she is with her game compared to when she left off,

Eden reminds me of Fran in terms of her top level thus far. Decent enough to get results at 10k circa 600 ranking but just short of the next step.

We can hope that she pushes on but the likes of Katy, Harriet Freya etc are a level above.

Sam has an early break against 2 seed Totka, 2*-1...

But the big difference is that Fran is nearly three years older than Eden.

Eden used to get gently mocked, as someone who kept entering tournaments and never winning, and it was difficult to remember that she was so young. She obviously decided to forgo the junior approach and learn her tennis the hard way, on the adult circuit, getting thrashed week in, week out.

It was suddenly coming together (and I still put it down to Emily W-S's influence, when they suddenly won that doubles together in Egypt and then Eden had a light-bulb moment in her singles). And then she got injured.

So Eden's never had the 'bouncing-along-at-the-600-mark-not-really-going-anywhere' period that Fran has had. She's too young (only just turned 20) and been out for over a year.

6-2, 6-0 is rude.

Sam+ later play against her last 2 consecutive singles victims.

Wow Impressive from Sam, Totka is a top end 10k player possibly better so on the early evidence here she ll shoot up he rankings. Already in the top 900 now and counting. Keep going.

Totka is a reasonable 10K, but nothing special. Her results this year are average. Not surprised Sam won that.

The winner of Sam's semi final will win the tournament...

Other SFists are all from hot countries, and Sam is the only one still in doubles. So she'll be hoping for cool conditions and quick victories.
