(Real quietly .... wowzer ...... this is looking SUPERB ..... either Dodin is even worse on clay than expected ..... or Naomi has suddenly figured out all this red sandy stuff ..... who cares ...... just keep going.....)
Gladly looks like I was overly swayed by Dodin's recent results in assessing this match. Still a great effort from Naomi, just needs to finish the job.
Good effort from Heather earlier to get it done it straight sets as it had the potential to be a very long and draining match.
Seriously impressed by the way she closed it out under pressure, when Dodin leveled at 4-4 and had 15-30 in Naomi's next service game I admit I thought it was all going Pete Tong but Naomi just steadied herself and closed the deal. Great composure there.

Yes, that looks very good considering Naomi had just lost the 3 games in a row which included 2 very tight Dodin service games and the break a bit out of the blue, so there could have been a temptation to think ... 'gawd, this could have been just about over' and suddenly she's in real danger. Well finished off from there.

I think the key here, is the clay court conditions. Prague it was very cold and damp making for slow and heavy conditions, awful for Naomi, whereas Madrid is played at altitude and the clay is much quicker, great for Naomi. Dodin played very well last week, but she's clearly not a natural clay court player. There's probably other factors, Fitzy's unbelievable coaching prowess and Naomi's ability to learn very quickly, plus Dodin had a bit of a shocker.
Solid win for Hev after coming back from a mild injury was good.
Brilliant, really, really proud of you Ms Broady, delighted to see you overturning everybody's doubts (though I think it was pointed out earlier that this Madrid clay plays a bit quicker than the rest). Never mind, its a wonderful result, and must be Naomi's first 20 points on clay!
And congratulations to Heather too, for another of her battling results, good to see her great TB mentality here.
