Week 18 - WTA Premier Mandatory - Madrid, Spain - Clay

Feels like a crucial game for Jo at the start of set 2, long game on service, she manages to hold after several deuces and facing multiple BP 4-6 1-1*

Laura's 2nd serve getting destroyed.

Laura 40-15 fails to put away a drive volley and then rather goes to pieces to concede another break 0-3*

Jo finding it hard to get any change out of the Garcia serve; prompts another long chat with Carrill. Jo very upset during the exchange, and for once this year, her head visibly goes down. Carrill placates her and sends her back out.

But Jo retires...

I just found the stream and it did look as though Johanna was fighting back tears at the change-over.

It may have been the thing with her eye from the first set? But, She was really upset, at the sit down, called the coach, and looks utterly dejected walking off. Concern.
all the best Jo.

4-6 1-2 RET

Poor Jo. I just hope that whatever it was, isn't going to be long term.

Cummon Robbo, fly the flag last woman standing. Not looking good this set though at 0-3

Only one double fault from Laura so far is pretty good. Sorry about Jo.

Has Laura run out of steam or has Vika upped her game?

Some good serving and follow-ups from Laura there to save the break point 4-1

Fine margins. Since 4-4 in the first set, Laura has lost 4 games in which she had game point. Level dropped a bit.

Thanks, that's such a shame. I'm still encouraged though. Not bad going staying with Vika whatever the score says, and much better than I dared hope for before the match. At least we have no bagels now.
