Week 17 - Challenger ($75,00+H) - Santaizi ATP Challenger, Taipei, Taiwan (carpet)

Neatly done Liam . From the short bursts of stream my phone allowed me to see he was steady and persistant against an opponent who was not playing badly.

Big hand for both of the boys in the Far East, which by definition for Dan is anywhere East of Tamworth.

It's been a pretty lean 15 months for Liam since reaching the FQR of last year's Aussie Open, and even the Wimbledon win was essentially a challenger level match that just happened to take place on a Grand Slam stage. Great to see him stringing a few wins together again at this level - let's hope he can keep it going!

And come on now Evo let's have 2/2!

I'm curious what has caused the improvement. He always seemed to me to be playing less aggressively most of the last year on the odd occasions I saw him play. While that could obviously just have been caused by a lack of confidence and ability to keep the ball in otherwise it almost seems to me that he is more likely to keep the ball in when a little more attack minded - he has a kind of style/technique that seems more suited to playing that way. In some of the loses I watched it seemed that a lot of the shots he missed were just rally shots or fairly basic defensive shots when out of position.

Basically it seems to me that he is not that much more likely to end the point with a miss when playing aggressive shots than when just playing conservative rally shots so just playing more aggressive shots seems an obvious strategy. Does it look that way to anyone else too?
