The new rankings are out on the ATP site and Evo is confirmed at 97. Damn. That is so good to see.
It is good to see, but as a long term Evo fan (even if he has drove me crazy more times than I can remember) I am more pleased at how he did it. On balance I always thought he would probably make it there eventually but I always thought it would be mostly based on a two or three great weeks at fairly big tournaments. If you had told me he would make it by dragging himself up from 772 to 97 in the space of a year, with no protected ranking, no wild cards, no short cuts but by 12 months of hard graft, consistent performances and grinding out results I wouldn't have believed you. As long term members of this forum will likely recall I have criticised him pretty harshly when I felt he deserved it but I really can't overstate how much credit I think he deserves for the last 12 months.
Dan features on the ATP website Challengers section!
I feel sure Dan will win a load more points in the next 3 weeks if he can stay healthy. His mind is very much in the right place. His serving stats in the final were rather different to the semi! To grind out an important win when you hit 10DFs is good. He was mentally strong throughout, such fortitude bodes well for the challenges ahead.
I agree with RJA's comments - except that I am not a long-term fan of Mr Evans. Indeed, I avoided engaging particularly with his results, on the grounds that it wasn't worth putting one's own emotional energy into caring about a player's career unless he/she was committed to said career ... and as he himself said on occasion, that wasn't always the case. But now really delighted that he has committed and that he is doing so spectacularly well. Hurrah for him.
In the 'congrats to Hilts too' train of thought, Martin Weston and others, are also posting congrats to Evo's physical coach/personal trainer, Ashcon Rezazadeh.
Top stuff Evo, he really is an enigma, but what a legend and what a talent, what he's done over the last 12 months to get into the top 100 is simply inspirational. It will be fascinating to see what damage he does over the grass court season. I would be tempted to put a small bet on him for Nottingham, or at least for winning some matches there. Always played well there and it's sort of his home tournament. Hopefully it'll now shut up Mr Andrew Castle the next time he commentates on one of his matches.

Castle will do one of two things. He will either bang on endless about Evo's previous shortcomings or he will do a complete about turn and hype him up to a ridiculous degree.
It would be great if Evo could exceed Castle's career high of 80 prior to Wimbledon.

I'm proud of the fact Castle blocked me on Twitter after I corrected his lazy tweets about the French Open Lady year. The guy is right warmer can't go him at all.

I too reside in the "blocked by Castle on Twitter" camp. Believe it was for daring to politely correct some of his inaccuracies during his commentary re: the Wimbledon qualifying process. If I recall correctly he stated one needed to win only two matches to qualify and Wimbledon qualifying had tie-breaks in the final set "unlike the main draw". Not sure if this is correct now, but it certainly wasn't when he said it.
