Liam's match is well underway, has lost the first set easily 6-2. 75% first serves in, but only 41% won.

Just to say that I agree with Oakland's comments and, as usual, he's expressed it well.

I don't see any 'new Dan'.

It's just a fact that lads at 20 tend to be a bit more 'wild' than young men of 25. And some more than others.

They're the same people, just going through the phases.

I think also that young men (especially those who found juniors easy and/or are a big fish in their federation's small pond) expect it to be easy.

Players at 25 have a far better perspective, of what's needed, of the capricious and cruel nature of injuries, the work, the ups and downs.....

And a more grounded team helps a lot.

A poor game with at least 3 UEs from Liam means that Liam loses his serve.  4-3.

A fairly straight forward victory for Karavchuk.  I only saw the 2nd set, but he was in control. Liam didn't handle his big serve well.  Liam was being aggressive when he was into the point, but if your weapons are smaller, you can't afford to miss so often.  Not a bad performance from Liam, though not his best either.  I think his game plan was correct, it was just the execution. Still, it has been a good week for him, I hope he can carry some confidence into next week.

It's hard to judge Liam's level this week as he has benefited from a very kind draw. All I can say is some much needed points and hopefully a confidence boost that will pay dividends over the coming weeks.

Dan going well at 5-2* up in the 1st, but what on earth is that "music" they are playing over the loudspeaker on the changeovers.

Extremely impressive first set by Dan I thought, especially the two breaks he won. Some lovely forehands, both cross court and inside out, and a few good backhand winners down the line too. Good serving too, a very high intensity set by Dan.

Play starts at 1.00pm local tomorrow, I think that is 5.00am UK time.  There are two doubles matches first, then Liam, then Dan.  What is the average length of a doubles match these days?    I'm guessing that Liam will start around 8.30ish, which isn't too bad....

cry  Sadly for me, 5am UK time means 1am Brazil time, so Liam will be starting around 3am to 4am for me.  Much as I would love to watch, I think I will just have to see the results when I wake up.  Sorry Liam/Dan.

I'm sure as such an experienced poster here you know this already Bob but just in case you don't/for those who don't - you can watch the full match as though live at livestream.com/atp for all challengers (with commentary for most US challengers) - it is not quite as good because if you accidentally mouse over the picture you can see how far through the match you are which can give away whether there is a third set or come back etc. but better than just checking a result.

Brill the livestream link works without having to log in! thank you very much.

What a fantastic match, great standard of hitting, Dan doing so well to stay with an ever improving Berankis

I see the points folk have made, but such has been the change in attitude ( and there was such a particular self confessed bad attitude and commitment for a long time, so undermining his talents, whatever else may have been in play such as injuries ), that having been cynical ( and not alone in that ) when the "new Dan" phrase raised its head a few months ago - 'what again', I have been subsequently been so impressed that he has continued as he has. "New Dan" for me
