Well, not WC, but in the Qualies, we have youth in our way, and some tough looking clay foes:
Hev [q13] gets 19 year old Russian, Komardina 172 (Former JWR 15)
In a section with Bianca Andreescu, Dalma Galfi & Richel Hogenkamp [q4] as dangers
Naomi [q15] has 19 year old Swiss, Teichmann (Former JWR 3)
Fanny Stollar, Haddad Maia [q3] & Soler-Espinosa make this a tough looking section
Tara has the girl Hev beat for her Osaka title, way back when, Kai-Chen Chang (WR 108) [q6] - not great on clay though
Tough looking section, too, Lemoine, Rus, Lottner, Kalinskaya.

Data I post, opinions I offer, 'facts' I assert, are almost certainly all stupidly wrong.
As she was a Brit, just to mention that Izzy Wallace made the final of the Australian RG wildcard play-off.
However,, she lost to junior, Jamiee Flouriss (who, as mentioned here, was amazingly impressive at Surbiton last year, especially for her age, even though she lost)
Nice, well done to Izzy.
Makes me think how we could be having our own R-G (like the hyphen?) WC play-off. And the LTA could livestream it, like the USTA do with theirs.

Teichmann just got to the final of the 100k in Cagnes-sur-mer, so that looks particularly tough, whereas the Russian girl has done alot of losing in WTA qualifying so maybe a good bit easier.
Always nice to have an good under-dog story (the joy of wildcards)
Well done to Jessika Ponchet, age 20, ranked about 440 in the world, who took out Galfi, ranked about WTA 150, in the QR1 round.
She thanks her family for how much they have had to shell out, and the costs, etc. etc. And the FFT for the wildcard. Can make a big difference in a career, so well done to her for making the most of it.

The Paul-Henri Mathieu 'scandal', mentioned above, finished exactly as the movie-script would want, with him winning the three quali rounds.
The NOISE from the court when he won was deafening !
(wasn't there, but from the video clips)
And Kudla was totally OK with it:
NY Times :The fans favored Mathieu with loud chants, and Kudla, a 24-year-old American, felt no ill will toward the spectators.
It was probably the best atmosphere Ive ever played in, he said. It was like Davis Cup. I think there were like 10 people cheering for me. The rest were for him, and that was O.K. I totally understand it. Hey, its better than no one being there.
Saw that and thought it would be a crowd-pleaser. And I'm rather glad he got Goffin. If you're in your last RG, might as well have a top player to start off. Should get a decent court ...
