Week 16 - ITF ($25K) - Nanning, China Hard

Katie has had her chances deep in this 3rd set, but has just been broken at 4-4.

Katy really blows her service game at *4-4. From 40-0 and advantage, she saves a break point, then on the second plays a great point but balloons a simple put away miles long.

4-5*

Court looks an absolute mess, not very evenly oiled over the years it would seem!

And that's that, but I'm going to say great effort by Katie this week and blame the scheduling.

Katie goes down 26 61 64

Argh that's a shame. Absolutely had it. Missed break points at 4-3* as well.

Played pretty well overall, clearly a top 250 standard already.

Seems very likely.

Most players find two matches on the trot really hard.

There's mental and physical fatigue.

And especially when it's at the top of your level.

And she's so young (I remember Caroline Woz talking about how much a girl's body changes in terms of stamina and strength as she matures and that people think of it way too much as a male phenomenon).

Great week, Katie ! And shame about that rain....

Yeah, I think the takeaway is that she beat a WR#200 rather than here eventual defeat. A few extra ranking points should be neither here nor there for her trajectory.

SO close!

After going 3-0 up at the start of the final set I really thought she had it, but then lost nine points on the spin. More chances at 4-3* and definitely should have held at *4-4. Still a good week to get the three wins. I'm not sure how much the double schedule had an effect today but she didn't play badly in the second match despite it, so I class that as another positive.

Those games at 4-3 and 4-4 were a killer. Good effort from Katie this week though including a great win earlier and she will learn from the experience of playing back to back.

Yes, that would be my feelings even if a few extra points might ultimately have been turned into quite a lot

As said, the experience of playing these two matches in the day won't have done her any harm in the bigger picture, maybe even good, as long as she came out of the day at worst tired.

Good work, Katie

Brilliant first win for Katie. Shame she had to play 2 matches in the same day but she now knows how it feels to have to play 2 matches in the same day should she ever have to again. I watched most of the match and thought Katie was the much better player. If she was fresh i think she definitely would have won. Great first win though.

While agreeing that there's much more that matters rather than just ranking for Katie just now, that now takes her up to 73 points on Monday week - GB #9 and should be inside the top 450.

GB #7 & #8 for Monday week are currently Laura and Amanda, both on 79 points, though Laura will add at least another 1 if she plays in Morocco. In behind the big 3 and the best 3 of the rest - all over 100 points.
