Week 16 - ITF ($25K) - Nanning, China Hard

Have a feeling that Katie and Freya may get Wild cards for Wimbledon. Both will be nearing top 300 rankings by then I'd imagine.

Em on the other hand should probably call it quits in singles she's not good enough at this level. Find a good doubles partner. Can see Tara and Connie doing this soon as well although Connie is heading top 200 shortly.

Good win for Katie - qualifying spots are either seeds or wildcards, bar a Korean girl. Needs a bit of luck.

Nice job !

And, yes, Jaggy, I'd give them both a wildcard for Wimbly (although I know that a lot don't agree).

But absolutely disagree about Tara - she's so young still, there's plenty of time for her singles career, and she's not all that far away.

Don't really agree about Em either, although it's more arguable. Only last year she was doing well in singles. Everyone has bad patches.

I'd say Katie's as near a certainty as there is for a MDWC, whereas Freya has a good shot at it. That's an impressive win to qualify, looks to be in much better form this week, so confident she can do some damage in the MD.

Yes also absolutely disagree about Tara yet concentrating on doubles with Conny or anyone else for that matter. Re Emily, as I've said for the three or fou years that different folk have been 'retiring' her from singles, it's clearly up to Em herself and her feelings about it all. She is certainly in the biggest singles slump I can recall so may be feeling more that way though. She rather entertainingly went on the run that took her to a CH not long after I first read about 'retiring', that isn't going to happen again.

Katie doing really well here so far, hopefully she can make it count in the main draw. Not surprising she was a bit flat in last week's event playing so soon after the big junior event she came to China for.

Katie is drawn against the 4th seed Hiroko Kuwata. Could have been kinder, but if she can get through the first round, it could open up.

There's been thunderstorms most of the day in Nanning, but the weather suggests that they are about to pass, so hopefully Katie's match will start soon. Any later and it might have to be played tomorrow.

UPDATE: The match has indeed been moved to tomorrow. First match on Court 1.

Frustrating day for Katie - and means the match will now be in the middle of the night UK time.

The more relevant consequence for me is that Katie if she wins will have to play her R2 match with only 1/2 hours rest against an opponent who is fully rested. Tough break.

On the other hand, she could use it to her advantage and catch her opponent cold. Of course, a quick first round would be ideal and she hasn't really put a foot wrong so far this week.

There is another R16 match between Katie's L32 match and the winner playing Dalila Jakupovic in the L16. And I'm sure even that even if that is spectacularly quick they'll give much more than half an hour's rest   confuse

A win in her R1 / L32 match will be pretty good, I would be surprised and very impressed if she wins quickly. I guess just concentrate on that first match in a normal manner and then go from there.

Except 1/2 means between 1 and 2 hours Indy !, I knew there was one match between the 2. Absolutely focus on the 1st one, which is against the seed, and see how much you have in the tank left for the next one.
