Direct MD entry to tennis's elite Slam events for the top ranked only, lovely qualifying tournament to give others, such as up and comers, their opportunity. And I certainly have no problem in giving out quite a few qualifying WCs if needed, and yes Liam would currently need one. Well underranked, want an opportunity at your home Slam, here's your opportunity, prove yourself in qualifying and then you've really earned your place.
Yes, I know that in practice we will continue to have MD WCs at all the Slams this year, next year, for the foreseeable, and as I said I expect James to get one, but I don't have to like it

As usual Indy very well put and though many will disagree, which is their prerogative, I really don't see a problem with those who do not get direct MD entry, youngsters or not, having to prove themselves in qualifying. Save a lot of hassle and arguments.
With reference to the quote from the Guardian A131, I was not suggesting that James had made a comparison between himself and Katie B. Rather I was pointing out the funding situation at the time he gave the quote; namely that the support he received from the LTA as the long standing British #2 consisted of his Wimbledon WCs but that others who had achieved less pursued their entire careers on LTA expenses (and often got WCs as well). Of course the WCs are a valuable gift but I think the quote you highlighted was a veiled dig at the LTA for offering such boundless support to their favoured but largely unproven players yet letting their number 2 largely plough on unsupported (apart from the WCs). I don't think that makes him ungrateful for the WCs, and I didn't interpret his interview as such.
Obviously the funding situation is rather different now and most of those players favoured above James are having to make their own way as he did, most with conspicuously less success.
I'm well aware of your position on wildcards so I imagine we're never going to interpret anything on the subject the same way.
