Week 15 - Challenger ($100,000) - Joey Gratton Sarasota Open, Sarasota, FL, USA (clay)

L32: James Ward WR 176 (CH = 89 last July) vs Gonzalo Lama (CHI) WR 228 (CH = 196 in September 2014)

James will face the top seed, Denis Kudla (WR 59), or his compatriot, Noah Rubin (WR 190), if he gets through that one.  Perhaps worth noting that he won the title here in 2009, beating Carsten Ball in three...

Dino also playing doubles & there are worse partners for Neal:

R1:  (1) Scott Lipsky (USA) & Neal Skupski CR 127 (43+84) vs Facundo Argüello & Nicolás Kicker (ARG/ARG) CR 517 (216+301)

R1:  (WC) Sekou Bangoura & Connor Smith (USA/USA) CR 558 (189+369) vs Gerald Melzer (AUT) & James Ward UNR  (849+0 - but a CH of 233 in August 2011)

Broady didn't try qualifying here in the end?

In Korea and going rather well.  I don't blame him for making that choice as after his good 2014 it was around about this time last year on the American clay challengers that the wheels really started to come off.  Hopefully this Eastern swing will give Liam a little bit of his lost mojo back.

The quicker the Skupskis get back together the better. No joy for Neal...

How useless will James Ward need to get before the LTA/AELTC consider not giving him a WC for Wimbledon?

I could see him jacking it in after this season, his nose dive in form has been really spectacular.

I do not think at his age, he should drop down to futures, as you struggle to even break even.

I would imagine that he will get one this year on the basis of his successful run last year even if that was largely the result of a dream draw.

Of course there aren't too many likely candidates for a wild card anyway. Bedene and Edmund will make it in directly and it is possible that Evo could as well. Who beyond Evo (if he needs it) and Ward is likely to get a wild card? Maybe Broady on the basis that he also won a match last year (again mostly down to a very good draw) but beyond that?

Brit interest in Sarasota now officially over:

R1:  (WC) Sekou Bangoura & Connor Smith (USA/USA) CR 558 (189+369) defeated Gerald Melzer (AUT) & James Ward UNR  (849+0) by 6-4 0-6 [11-9]

Close, but not close enough! cry

Terrible. Once he's taken his Wimbledon wild card money time to quit, I can't see any way back to anywhere near the top 100
