'World' Team Tennis

Fitzy mentioned in his interview that Naomi had signed up for this and she has been selected by the Philadelphia Freedoms along with Caroline Wozniaki, Lukas Lacko, Daria Kasatkina, Fabrice Martin, Donald Young - Coach Josh Cohen

Dan Evans has been chosen by the San Diego Aviators along with James Blake, Shelby Rogers, Raven Klaasen, Daria Jurak - Coach John Lloyd

Ah, the memories come back of the inspirational leadership John Lloyd gave on the bench to Dan Evans in the ultimate defeat in the Davis Cup deciding rubber in Lithuania

Just to clarify - world team tennis is actually all USA based teams played in USA.

I'm pretty sure Neal Skupski made a couple of appearances last year.

You're correct. And he didn't just make appearances - he won a prize as best newcomer, if I remember correctly.

Sounds like certain other US 'world' sports events.

The draws will probably be quite weak this year as most of the top players will be busy in Rio - or at least the ones that have played enough Davis/Fed cup to qualify will be.

Just found this thread - sorry, The O - hadn't seen it - so I've copied over the post I put on this week's entries:

It looks like Naomi Broady is playing World Team Tennis this week, for the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Which should be a LOT of fun. And financially a VERY good idea !

I've always thought it sounded a great format (team tennis in 5 sets (to 5, I think) with one pairing of each sort of tennis playing each set i.e. Men's singles, women's singles, each doubles and mixed) and then add up the games.

Here's her team and schedule:

add: found a photo:

Looks to me that Naomi lost her singles 4-5 against Pauline Parmentier

But aced the womens doubles 5-1 (playing with Sam Crawford)

And the Mixed doubles (with Fabrice Martin) 5-3

It goes on two weeks. Bravo, Naomi, for getting a spot. Brilliant initiative.

(NB John Lloyd is the coach for the San Diego Aviators, no sign of Dan Evans)

PS Does anybody have any idea how much they get paid? A lot of the numbers I've seen are absolute telephone numbers, but more for 'star' players.

However, even the 'ordinary' players will get enough to swamp their normal earnings, I believe. If so, even MORE congrats to Naomi

Hi - a few weeks back Dan withdrew from this and a very angry John Lloyd spoke in the press at his frustration at Dan and his letting him down.

This is from the Daily Mail

Thanks, JonH, hadn't seen that - the 'pure coincidence' of Styson's appointment freeing up a job for an LTA director at UKSports is just sublime...

And the Evo/Lloyd thing made me smile - I love Dan dearly but if John Lloyd banked on him (And WHY would Evo want to be in a team coached by Lloyd, I mean ,why???) then he's a fool. Anwyay, I'm sure John Lloyd is being paid a packet (and I see that his team scraped a win last night).

Go, Naomi, I say ! Well done, Fitzy.

Ah so that's what Naomi is doing the next two weeks. It would have been rather rude anyway to nick the GB #2 ranking spot from Hev while she was off in Rio.

( Naomi will close to 25 points behind Hev on 15/08 before she herself has points to defend. Apart from having had her World Team Tennis contract to fulfil and wouldn't want to break that like naughty Mr Evans, I wonder how much such as a GB #2 ranking matters to most players vs world rankings. Probably not a lot, maybe just really GB #1. We'll still monitor it all though )

Just found him - Neal's in the NY Empire team (which lost last night)

Looks like he lost his Men's doubles 5-4 and his Mixed doubles 5-2

(But it's the games that count, if I've understood it right, so 5-4 is fine really)

I see the Bryans pulled out of the Olympics, but are playing WTT. If you believe the Zika excuse good luck to you. Money talks........

I believe it wholeheartedly. They have made no secret of the fact that they wanted to be in Rio more than anything tournament-wise - it was why they kept playing until this year (and haven't said what they'll do after this, so far as I know). But they are also, as per their Twitter accounts, both very family oriented.

Martina Hingis is also on the Washington Roster which is twice as large as anyone else in the league
