Week 14 - WTA Premier ($753K) - Charleston, SC, USA - Green Clay

Ah - I had assumed there wouldn't be a stream. Glad I haven't missed much.
Laura's lost the first set 6-3.

And now 0-3 in the second having missed BP on Tig's serve in the first game....

From the stream I saw she was playing ok. Bit slow but clay was always a nightmare. Couldn't have had a much better draw though, Tig hasn't been up to much lately.

Hard road back

Laura was always going to find it hard to be consistent enough to win on clay in blustery conditions. She lost 5 games in a row after the stream packed up which was the difference, alongside the break point conversion (0/4 vs 3/5). Laura did OK on serve, but really needs to be winning more than 33% of return points on clay.

Stream quality was great for the last two games.
Laura moves into 7th place on the GB Road to Singapore Live rankings, leap frogging Lisa, Maia, Katy & Mandy.
I can only speak for myself, I'll be glad when the SE, SR, PR, even WC are all exhausted, and points can be accumulated only by winning matches; lots and lots of matches.

QR1: (WC) Laura ROBSON (GBR) 504 lost to Patricia Maria TIG (ROU) [q10] 129 3-6 3-6

As Paul said, hard road back for Laura, but I do at least finally get the real feeling that she is back on that road.

One could conclude that this year Laura is very competitive at every level, full tour, qualifying for tour events, 25k qualifying events. Sadly she can't win a match at any level, but at least the double faults are being kept under control for now. The big points seem to be an issue at the moment. Hopefully the wrist will continue to allow her play and maybe she can start to improve and win matches.

It does seem ridiculous that more than 2/3rds of the points Laura will have on Monday week (45 out of 66, I make it) will have come from R1 or qr1 losses - those close to her in the GB rankings must be wishing they could pick up points quite so easily. Good to hear that she's not playing as badly as the string of losses might suggest though

Yes, though Laura would clearly too much rather she was getting most of her points from wins.

With all that she has been through, and clearly how very much higher she might otherwise have been, it would seem to me very churlish to make too much about her current points imbalance, even if created by what many would see as a sometimes at least arguable WTA  points system. I reckon most players, even if on similar points ( but much less inherent ability ) will be just happy to see her playing rather than chunter about her points

From the number signed on and looking at the women's section during her match she continues to hold great interest on the forum, and undoubtably widely beyond. I include myself and I can't always fully explain it, but I don't apologise for it. All the best to her.

I take the view that Laura is using up the brownie points she acquired by being top 30 as of right; yes the freebies are flattering her current ranking and she will need to start earning her points soon. There are encouraging signs that she will be competitive for the grass season; whether she can convert that into wins will be the litmus test. Fingers crossed she can :)

Not expecting much from the clay court season except hopefully staying healthy.

How can you call losing every single match 'encouraging signs'? She didn't even win matches in 25k qualifying. I'm not trying to be horrible but seriously needs to get through the mental battle that is winning a match against anyone.

I do think losing in qualifying and gaining points is a bit crazy too. I think that seeded players that skip round 1 in tournaments should receive zero points as well so I'm not just picking on her!

Seeded players that get a bye past R1 then lose in R2 currently are treated as R1 losers for points. Whether they and surely also all the actual R1 losers should get zero rather than the normal 1 ( or 10 in mandatories ) is a separate issue  confuse

IMO you shouldn't get any points at any level unless you actually win a match.
