Emily 4-0 up second set on what should be a very good win.
Remember that Emily is very underranked and has already won a 10k and reached another final and has three doubles titles, so don't be too surprised if she goes deep this week and next couple of weeks.
Although I've been a mega fan of Emily's since seeing her last summer (our 'new Hev'), I don't think she's as underranked as all that. (Purely from last year, I rate her higher than Maia, although I may well be completely wrong).
Her standing is based on a very skinny base: a couple of very good tournaments but not enough to really to warrant it being extrapolated to make a full year ranking (unlike Lloyd, say).
She lost in the first round of her previous two 10ks. And although the draws weren't kind, she lost with very emphatic scores (I'd thought she'd be closer).
Personally, I think she plays about WR 550-600 or so but it's not that far off where she is now.
I certainly hope she gets a good run - and 10ks are so up and down that's it's very possible - but I don't think she's like Freya was last year, a complete under-ranked player that anybody who follows tennis could see, regardless of results.
From what I've heard here, Emily is off to play college tennis in the US (Stanford). She would probably be at least 4-500 if she played a full quota of events. I think she could get 60-80 pts without straining anything.
Given she stands to get a degree from one of Americas top universities it's unlikely she'll be lured back to play in the lower reaches of the ITF for no money.
I don't know, although she is entering a very academic institution which is rigid in terms of the academic baseline for entry, she has been selected as a student athlete. It is her tennis that got her in and she will be supported in her studies with an agenda to excel on court. Stanford is not an Ivy League institution, the focus of its athletics department is on sporting excellence and the definition of success is not to use your Stanford degree! The honours board adjacent to their tennis stadium reflects that in recording grand slam winners, NCAA tittles are very much an after thought
She must have been working pretty hard at school to get in which must have necessitated significant effort just managing the logistics and can't have been optimal for her tennis development when compared to her ITF peers. In that respect, although not under ranked in terms of futures performance level at present, in an environment specifically designed around her needs there is scope for significant improvement.
Compared to most college recruits she is already competitive at a level that would put her in the top 20 college players as a freshman! There is a high chance of her continuing to play and being competitive at local Futures and challenger events (eg Stockton) while in Palo Alto and returning (underanked) to play on the futures tour with WTA aspirations. A win win ... She can even get to watch a real baseball club although the present cohort do not compare with the 2002 vintage. Go cardinal
