Struggling from the deuce court in that opening game; saves 5 BPs but not a 6th

4 DFs in two service games - looks completely out of her depth in this match.

I think she has been thrown in too early, especially after getting battered last week in a 25K.

First set gone in 39 minutes (longer than many a 6-1 so Katie has been fighting; more fight needed now...)
1-6, 0-0*

Well, that could all be a very good omen.

A couple of years ago, another player was in a similar situation, aged 16, same as Katie, and just about to play under a WC to qualifying in Miami, awarded to her as a top junior, as is that tournaments's tradition.
This player also entered a $25k in the week prior to that Miami, and got thumped in straight sets in the first round of that $25K by the WR254.

Next week in Miami, this player then lost in round one of qualies, in straight sets (6 & 2) to a player of almost the exact rank that Katie's opposition is today. Davis is WR102 with a CH of 43. Vandeweghe, the victor of this match back in 2013, was WR 98 (with a CH then of 69).

Perhaps this player had been 'thrown in too early', time will tell.
This player, was Belinda Bencic.
