Slow start for Flipper, but Laura had her big chance at 6-5, still hopefully it's another somewhat encouraging display by Laura. 2nd set will be interesting.
I get the feeling (and I'm only going on livescore patterns here) that the sharpness and effectiveness of shots is there, but consistency - underpinned by lack of confidence in certain shots - is pegging her back. So many times she has got herself into BP positions and lost the AD point.
Not taking 6 break point chances at the end of the 1st and then in the 2nd cost her, 6-2 a very harsh scoreline for the 2nd set. Hopefully we may get some insight from Piers Newbery on how she actually played.
Laura goes down 6-7(4) 2-6
But, I'm reasonably encouraged by what the stats suggest.
DF under control - right until a few right at the end.
Served awfully early on - it was down at 22% at one point - but improved steadily to 53% but the end. Not stellar, but at least steady, and got better. But the serve was effective, bith first and second.
Made plenty of BP, indeed more than Kirsten, suggesting she was in games, just, as Grachka observed, unable to close. Reasonable on return won (40%) backs this up - this is almost identical to the stat for Hev in Monterrey against Flipper.
Saved 55% of BP suggesting the sometime troublesome nerve on big points was reasonable.
Overall points differential of 3% is about right for a generally tight match with this scoreline.
All things to suggest overall there is a foundation being built, slowly.
Hard to know what to factor in given the circumstance today for the opponent, but I'll read Laura's part optimistically for now.
AVU lost surprisingly to Peng, so it's possible both Belgians minds were half on what was happening back at home. I suspect the slow start could be explained by this. But once the match got going in earnest there was little to choose between the 2.
So Laura lost, but was very competitive which is fine for the moment. Hopefully she can kick on and win some matches in the clay court events she has a PR for.
Obviously a very difficult day for the Belgian players and I hope at least they have been able to get in touch with their families back home and confirm their safety. Difficult news can affect players in very different ways, some would not be able to focus whereas others might find such events provide perspective and so don't get nervous over such a minor thing in comparison as winning a tennis match.

H2H 0-1
2013 Budapest, Hungary - WTA International - Clay - R32, DK won 6-2 3-6 6-2
Kovinic has had a slow start to the year (6-7), her win against WR64 Allertova in the last round was her best so far, and only her second vs. top 100 this year.
She did run Kvitova to 3 close sets in Indian Wells though.
