Boys & Girls: Malta ITF U18 World Ranking Tournament, Malta, hard - Grade 4 (Week 11)

As usual there are a large number of Brits in Malta.

In the first round, the Spanish-based lads came through. Unfortunately, nearly all the girls lost :(

Boys:

Alexander Carlos PARKER (GBR) [6]     6-1 7-5     Alessio AMADEI (ITA)

Ryan GASKIN (GBR) [11]     6-3 6-2     Loris POURROY (FRA)

Girls:

Axana MAREEN (BEL) [1]     6-1 6-3     Isabella NUNEZ (GBR)

Yu SHAN (CHN)     6-3 4-6 6-3     Mae MCCUTCHEON (GBR)

Linda CAGNAZZO (ITA)     5-7 6-3 6-3     Tiegan AITKEN (GBR)

Maria KRUPENINA (RUS)     6-2 6-3     Eleanor SCARFF (LL) (GBR)

Yaroslava GADIATSKA (UKR)     6-3 7-6(0)     Donia ABDEL-AZIZ (GBR) [2]

Anna LOUGHLAN (GBR)     2-3 Retired    Sophia DERIVAN (IRL) [8]

Credit though to Isabella who's only 13, born 2002, and had the misfortune to draw the top seed.

Also, Tiegan (2001) who came through qualifying, beating the second Q seed.

Donia's misfortunes seem to continue.....

Tough draw but not a girl I've heard of is Issabella, assume she's very good hence why playing ITF as opposed to TE?

No idea what Donia is like now as not seen her for ages but a very dogged player, has played a huge amount though from a very early age. Anna Loughlan has retired from an event last week too I think.

Never seen her and know very little other than she is from Stroud.
She lost to Esther Adeshina in road to Wimbledon U-14's regionals 6-0 6-0 according to a local newspaper report.

She (Donia) used to be incredibly slight for her age, very very slim and petite.

I think she has done tons of tennis (home-schooled, driven Dad, I believe).

Used to be the best ITF ranked GB player for her age. But maybe has slightly overdone it ? Saturated with tennis ?

Vast resources help massively to be highly ranked ITF too, ability to travel and take coach clearly helps. She is a very smart player and very good, was never the best in her age group though.

Just realised Anna won, her opponent retired so that's good that she's fit and able to compete. A smart tough competitor.

Nice results from Alex and Anna:

R3 (L16):

Alexander Carlos PARKER (GBR) [6] 6-2 6-3 Allan DESCHAMPS (FRA) [12]

Anna LOUGHLAN (GBR) 7-6(5) 7-6(9) Zoziya KARDAVA (RUS) [11]

For someone who only got their first ITF singles points a couple of weeks ago, young Anna is doing very well....

Donia & Anna also won their dubs. As did our Soto-duo, Alex & Ryan. Eleanor+ lost hers.

No surprise Anna is doing well, top end junior in her age group, LTA always liked her, won a couple of Brit tours. ITF just means a lot of time/travel and money which isn't everyone's bag.

Yes. But in the last 12 months she has played 2 tournaments in Portugal, 1 in Hamburg, 1 in Malta, 1 in Luxembourg and 6 in the UK.

Without scoring a point.

So that's not nothing (well, for the points it's nothing smile)..... But it's still quite a lot of events, with a bit of travel, with no reward, and then two G4 QFs (and counting....)

Donia & Anna lost their doubles.

But Alex and Ryan won theirs, and are into the semis.

There are links to a couple of articles about Isabella in the rankings thread http://britishtennis.activeboard.com/t55857883/junior-rankings/?page=2  from late January

Not up on ITF but Soto reporting that their lads won their doubles semi in straight sets.

Good luck in the final, Alex and Ryan !
