Great result for AB. thought this was a real potential banana skin, but hopefully he can keep winning. Not too long until the hearing too?

If he loses the hearing and cannot represent GB, I would be in favor of this forum giving him less attention, or even not reporting on him. Could put it to vote if and when the times comes.

Cobblers! The ITF hearing is purely to decide whether he can or cannot be selected to represent GBR in the Davis Cup.  Irrespective of the outcome, Aljaz is nevertheless now a fully fledged British citizen & will thus "fly the flag" in any other tournament, big or small, so deserves our continued interest/support.  As a matter of interest, just what gives you, as a self-confessed Norwegian, the right to advise us Brits what to do?  confuse

The vote is about DC participation, not about playing under the British flag. So NO! he is now and remains British, so in my book we just support him as we would anybody else in the tournaments he chooses to take part in.

should we ignore Naomi because she doesn't play in the Fed Cup?

Top seeds Monroe & Qureshi next, the rest of the draw is ridiculously strong they might have to beat three Grand Slam finalists/winners to win the title.

I wonder when the last time Paes played in a challenger was.

Well, that's an emphatic win! Well done, the team. It's been a very good day for British players in Texas.

And according to the ATP website, Paes' last challenger prior to this was March 2010: lost to Martin Damm and Filip Polasek playing in the Sunrise finals with Lukas Dlouhy. Remarkably, this year marks Paes' first foray out of the top 50 since 2001. Not a bad record.

You've got a real bee in you bonnet about Tiafoe's name, haven't you SC ?

I agree, it looks really weird.

I'm sure I read somewhere that his mum wanted him to have something 'different' - I think that's a really poor justification, and ripe for trouble (sorry, Mrs. T)

But I wonder why it's 'i' for boys and 'e' for girls?

Francesco is obviously a boys' name. (Francesca for girls). Fransisca is a girls' name (Fransisco for boys).

So it doesn't seem obvious that it has to be one or the other in the shortened form.

Is it that obvious?  wink  It irritates the hell out of me! furious

Francis:  English form of the Late Latin name, Franciscus, which meant "Frenchman".  It was the name borne in the 13th century by Saint Francis of Assisi, who was christened Giovanni, but nicknamed "Francesco" by his father, an admirer of the French & who traded with French merchants.

Frances:  feminine form of Francis.  The distinction between "Francis" as a masculine name & "Frances" as a feminine name did not arise until the 17th century.

You learn something new every day! wink

And a bit more on the derivation from Wiki:

Due to the renown of the saint [i.e. Francis of Assisi], this Italian name became widespread in Western Europe during the Middle Ages in different versions (Francisco, François, etc.). However, it was not regularly used in Britain until the 16th century as Francis.

The name of France itself comes from the Germanic people known as the Franks; the origin of their name is unclear but is thought to mean "free".

The characteristic national weapon of the Franks was the francisca, a throwing axe.

Still on the subject of outlandish given names, my jaw dropped when I read an article in Metro on the way to work this morning reporting the announcement by Jamie Oliver & his wife that they were expecting their fifth child.  It named the other four poor little buggers:   Poppy Honey, Daisy Boo, Petal Blossom & Buddy Bear!!!  disbelief
