As for the poor qualifiers, not only do they face seeds, but three of the seeds have rankings which mean that technically they shouldn't be playing Challengers (one WC, so permitted, and two who must have been lower ranked three weeks ago).

I don't remember players being shown as Alts in a main draw before unless they were top seeds in qualifying who got moved up to the main draw because someone pulled out in between the time of the qualifying draw and when play in qualifying started - any slots in the draw that come free after qualifying starts should become lucky loser places.
However, there are lots of Alts in the main draw both here and in Drummondville this week, so maybe the policy has changed to show any players who didn't make it in at the original entry cut-off date but have got into the main draw since as (Alt) and of course, there would have been a lot of fairly late withdtrawals from the North American Challengers this week given that they are being held in the second week of Indian Wells.
Meanwhile, Cam has upset Lapentti 3 & 4!

Another terrific won for Cam, 6-3 6-4. Good luck in the MD.
Five points in the bag for that as well although I am guessing with his college status, he will have to forego the $1.300 prize money. I hope he gets a generous expenses package.

Can't imagine his expenses will be huge given Irving is a stone's throw away from TCU.
In terms of likelihood of success, it's certainly a tough one. But in terms of experience, it's actually pretty super. And given that he's already got points and a very good FQR win to show for the tournament, there's still been quite a lot of benefit even if he doesn't make it through to the next round. And who knows?
To be honest, in situations like this, I'd rather see a draw like this go to a young player at a local university, for whom it's all still about opportunity and a win would be glorious but a loss, if it happens, isn't a major issue - rather than to some struggling lower-level Challenger player who's journeyed at considerable expense only to discover that he's got a nightmare of a draw.
