Friedsam has been on a decent trot so Naomi needed to be on her game; which by the sounds of it she clearly wasn't :(
Hey ho, forget that and focus on coming out strong in Miami...
Naomi's doubles is under way, and it's being streamed for those interested (probably just me!)
Spoiler
Virginia Woolf's infinitely less talented, distant descendant muses about a tennis match late one night...
As with all the matches I've caught this week in San Antonio, a steady stream of emergency service sirens punctuates the background swelling in and out with a rather frightening regularity. Perhaps they're next to a hospital, or police station. Local nightlife aside, there's a decent sized crowd in for a round 1, last match of the day doubles at this level - I'd say maybe a few hundred.
Oh! The tennis?
1 break each, our team having recovered an early deficit. Rosolska was awful for the opening three games, and thereafter the best player. Naomi not getting to do much except be hit on no less than three occasions as Rodionova belted the ball into her midriff or back. She did not turn around to acknowledge the apologies. When Rosolska and Broady hi-five (as is now obligatory, after ever point), Aicija almost has to jump to reach. I keep thinking of Big Bird; but then his usual buddy is Snuffaluffagus, who is decidedly large, and so the image doesn't quite work. 4-3*
There were two set points at 40-30* but they didn't have the manners to accept the invitation. *5-5
Again Rodionova hits Naomi with a beamer. I looked in to their history, they played twice, perhaps something happened in the match last year in qualification at Roland Garros, because this is starting to seem pre-meditated, at least to one idly musing. Rosolska's serve is broken almost single handedly by the other Pole, Jans-Ignacik; two Polish doubles specialists at the same event and not playing together, they do favour the same side of the court.
Either way, there are more chances to recover the break and set up a tie-break, again at 40-30* but both are spurned, clear opportunities on each point to hit winners, but not taken.
So, as Naomi's backhand down the line attempt does not, in fact, go down the line as advertised, but, rather, drifts angularly away from it (and long too, for good measure,) the set is lost. The umpire takes a comfort break!
First set gone 5-7
Spoiler
All go in the second set racing out to a lead. At this juncture, at the sit down, Rosolska asks to see her coach. He positively sprints on to court, stops abruptly, drops to his knees and the speaks to Alicija only for the entire break, completely ignoring Naomi, he then bounces up and sprints off. 3-0*
Jans-Ignacik seems to favour the MTB, maybe she's paid by the hour. To this end, she serves a game packed with DF in which two attempts do not reach the net. She then tries to prolong the game by actually making a first serve but it's thumped for a winner and our teams lead in the set extends. Naomi holds. One of the ball kids is much more focused and serious than the others, snapping to attention and moving with almost military (or SW19) precision. It's rather heartening to see her taking such pride and diligence in her task, bounding and scampering as her colleague shuffles about listlessly. 5-0*
A first stab at serving out the set begins as another fleet of sirens drift into the Texan night to attend some unknown tragedy - maybe a stabbing.
They recover from *0-40 with 4 very nice points in a row to take us to the Match tie break. So called because it occurs in a match. Completely unlike all other tie-breaks, which, as any fool know occur in a set. Big difference. Yuuuge!
To the MTB! 5-7 6-1
3-3 at the change 4-3* 5-3* Naomi tries the cut off intercept 5 shots in a row, can't make it, finally gets an easy one, and nets. *5-4 *5-5 wonderful point, including, I kid you not, 3 desperation moon balls come lobs onto baselines all players scurrying in all directions. Naomi finally wins it with a magnificent cross court backhand on the run. 6-5* 6-6* *6-7 *6-8 6-9* these last 4 points combined took about a minute of play time. The match seemingly disappearing in an instant. 7-9* Good volley Naomi! *8-9 Fantastic anticipation cut off from Rosolska. All square! To the third change! *9-9 Naomi, backhand, unforced, long 9-10*
Stupid Match Tie Break
They won 9 more points in the match but lose.
QF: Broady/Rosolska (GBR/POL) lost to An. Rodionova/Jans-Ignacik (AUS/POL) [3] 5-7 6-1 [9-11]
