Her serving is marginally better than her returning still but when it's normally the biggest strength in her game it's the thing that needs to improve the most today.
Slightly more alive in the second set, but just 5 points on return the whole match.
Which, now a break down, doesn't offer much encouragement. Stranger things have happened though...
2-6 3-4*
Contender for worst performance from a top 100 player this year. Naomi looked so slow around the court. She was late on most of her shots. Serve was shocking. Return was even worse. First shot after her serve was terrible in the early part of the match though did improve.
It was dreadful. She's lucky she has such a strong first serve because without that it would have easily been a love and love performance for all the rubbish she did on her ground strokes. Easily the worst I've ever seen her play.
I didn't watch the match, but the result isn't a major shock. Even if Naomi hadn't played at a lower level than she has in recent months, Friedsam is always going to be a tough prospect. Her serve is good, her groundstrokes are brutal and she's athletic. Her main weakness is her willingness to apply her talent throughout the whole match. Onwards to Miami and hopefully a more positive experience win or lose. We've got to appreciate the progress Naomi has made. Back in July I was pleasantly surprised when she won consecutive matches at 50K level, now she's viewed as a title strong contender at that level (on hard court).
Naomi hast improved tremendously in recent times but she isn't going to win every match. I think there are unrealistic expectations - as there are for all the Brits when they get some good results. If she can keep the general standard up she'll be fine
Sounds like a really bad day for Naomi, but as a one off not too much to worry about. It's more important how good her good weeks are than how bad her bad weeks are.
