After months of delay (all my fault), I am very happy to announce that the following have now been appointed as new moderators, in alphabetical order:
- indiana - paulisi - Shhh
The other three forum members who were under consideration (two obvious contenders and someone else who applied whom I don't think was mentioned on this thread as a contender) would no doubt do a very good job too but I tried to get a mixture of early risers and late sleepers and to base the selection on how much people appeared to actually want the job, as it were, as well as how much experience they had had of this and other forums, the range of sub-forums they frequent, their tech skills (not that those are really necessary), comments from others and so on. I hope those selected and the others (who are now definitely on the reserve list should we turn out to need any more mods) will all be ok with this.
I should add, though, that none of the contenders got excluded for negative reasons. The reason I only wanted to appoint 2 or 3 new mods at once (instead of all 6) is that while we needed some more active mods to supplement those who aren't here so much any more, I was concerned that if we had too many very active modders at once, they might end up inadvertently treading on each other's toes - e.g. there must be some potential for inadvertent deletions if 3 or 4 mods all end up trying to delete a thread virtually simultaneously or for lots of mods to PM the same forum member as they try to quietly resolve a problem.
Re. the diversity point made earlier in the thread, I don't know how diverse the new mods are since I haven't met all of them offline, they just seemed like the best people for the job at this point in time.
Given that one of the things that made us look for new mods was the sad loss of Madeline earlier this year and given janeinScotland's point earlier in the thread, I am sorry that I haven't been able to appoint another female mod. It wasn't for want of trying but if I have missed someone who still posts here regularly, please let me know, even if that person is yourself! Of course, the female mods we already have are excellent and I can vouch for the fact that the one who is here the most these days isn't nearly as scary if you need to PM her as she may sometimes appear to tennis parents who have given their kids weird American-style names

If you do need a female mod in the future I'd be happy to step up. I didn't put myself forward mainly because I felt that there were loads of people in contention who post lots more than I do.

Thanks. I probably should have asked people again first (what consultation there was all happened months ago) but I didn't want to further delay the process. I think 3 new mods is enough to start off at the same, for the reasons mentioned above, but we can certainly revisit things after a few months.

I think it's probably fair to say we'll all have to be on our best behaviour given those names listed above. Only kidding lads, have a great time moderating a great forum.
Thanks for all the hard work that goes into the board. The detail and breadth of coverage is right up there with the "non league football newspaper" and there are a hardcore of posters constantly knocking out and populating threads with detail that makes the site unique, so thank you to them all.
The intensity of kitchen spam culling has dipped since the heady days of Madeleine's moderation, she had a steak ready for every culinary homo nosferatu indeed good luck to those trying to fill such big shoes when it comes to desimating culinary spam before sunrise.
I was and still am amazed by the range of views expressed and on occasions the way in which debates pan out and who feels safe to comment (Rumour has it Nicola Sturgeon and Indy are one person) this is facilitated by the considered and gentle touch with which the site is moderated much of which is intrinsic by the posting community. It is particularly heartening that assuming a point is reasonable another poster will step in and support on the rare occasions when things get sticky.

I really value the mods on our site, and all who contribute. When I compare it to MTF which I have looked at recently (as I wanted a not so biased viewon how the wider tennis world view Andy and Novak), it is much friendlier and the contributer generally make good and well articulated points. I feel protected by the mods if things do get out of hand as we have seen on very few occasions.
Thanks all mods, (and posters) for making it such a great site.
Scammers may be expanding their strategy. I happened today to look at the mod list that appears in the bottom left corner of the title page for any of the individual formus (i.e. not the overall title page, the first page when you click into one of the sub-forums). Here is a screenshot taken of it:
The three names highlighted in red I did not recognise. Perhaps they were very old names? No longer active? Normally, I'd recognise those by now, but not here, so I checked the profiles, and they're all like this:
They are all linked to a phishing pharmacy operation (which is what is being described in bottom right there).
These scammers have not only managed to create profiles, but to correctly assign themselves mod privileges! This has been the case for over a month, and in that time there's no knowing what they could have done, if anything, even if they were only active for those three days.
This probably needs to be followed up with Activeboard, as there's no way that should be possible. They need to provide security against this sort of abuse, and reassurance.
I also recommend everyone to change their password, especially if it is a password you use anywhere else on the internet.
Obviously, if these are illegitimate scammers, they should be removed from the mod list.
