RE: Mods

Madeline helped me deal with some iffy pms - at the time she seemed the obvious "go to" and she was really great.

It's hard to explain in a pm how another person's posts can upset you - I guess as a female I assumed Madeline would understand - and she did.  I'd guessed she was a Mod 'cos of the Kitchen removals - and she came across as someone would be able to sympathise/advise/help.

I'm not sure who I'd pm if it happened again.  Maybe having read this thread ...

Might we please also perhaps consider putting a sticky thread from one of the venerable members permanently at the top of the Andy section, saying who Madeleine was, and have it serve as a testimonial to her wonderful service, and love of Andy?

This is subject to change if there turns out to be a consensus that there's a better idea but, for now, I've moved the thread I set up for her after I was told the news to the Andy section and stickied it there. I originally put it on one of the general sections but given that there aren't many stickies in that section and she was one of the early members who joined very much as an Andy fan (rather than an Andy and other Brits fan) before the Murray-specific forums were set up, insomniacfolder's suggestion seems quite appropriate to me.

Hi guys,

I know I don't post much here anymore but I still check in virtually every day or at least every week to keep up to date with results.

I agree on the subject on new mods, let me know who's willing! I've also updating Steven's settings so he has the ability to create new mods too.

Thanks Sheddie, I was wondering whether you still lurked here I hope all is going well with the writing career.

Three potential new mods have pm'd me already, so if you'd like me to pass on the details to avoid duplication, just let me know. Alternatively, they can continue to write to me and I'll consult you with the details in a week or so, whichever you prefer.

That's a lovely idea.

Thanks to all those who do so much here - it is very much appreciated. And I would definitely second those who've been suggested above to join the mods.

Crap, I just banned ISF.

I was trying to approve his post with a link to Cav's blog, and I've got so used to banning the kitchen spammers I absently minded clicked ban IP without thinking.

Hellllp. I hope he's computer minded enough to change his IP or something, because I'm not sure you can reverse it!

I always worry I might inadvertently do that some day.

I think an admin may be able to reverse it and Sheddie said he'd now given me admin access but I can't see any admin functions - I'll have a better look (just thought, maybe logging off then back on might do it) and get back to you.

Just a quick note to potential mods who have written to me in the last week or so. Having spoken to Sheddie, I'm intending to write the brief guide to the modding functions then set up and announce the new mods later this week. If you did write and haven't had a reply yet, don't worry, it doesn't mean you've been ignored - I've only got back to people when I've had specific queries so far, but I do intend to contact people before making the announcement.

Another quick note, in case potential mods are wondering why they still haven't heard anything. As some of you will know by now, I could be moving to the US very soon (long story, some of which I may recount one day ...) and things have got on a bit on top of me this week, so that's why.

I've been giving the top 25 tables priority in any 'tennis time' I've had this week because I don't want there to be another break in them until it becomes unavoidable, in order to minimise the number of weeks I need to catch up on later.

There should be a bit of a lull on Monday (famous last words ...), in which case I'll at least start replying to people then and might even be able to finalise it all that day, with any luck.

Edit: they were indeed famous last words - I suddenly remembered on Monday that the time I had stopped compiling the GB men's top 25 and best 18 tables last year was during Miami and if I didn't grab the details of all the remaining 2015 counting events before next Monday, I'd no longer be able to be sure each player's breakdown on the ATP site wasn't missing at least one counter that I hadn't already recorded, which would create even more work. I've been working through the players every time I've had a few spare moments this week and I've finally got all the 2015 scores recorded in the right format, though there's still a bit more work to do before the best 18 tables are completely up to date again.

Those spare moments have been further limited by the fact that the deadline for a research proposal my wife is due to submit is fast approaching, so I've had rather a lot of proof-reading to fit into my free time this week - and fascinating as the material is (that's not sarcasm, it really is interesting), proof-reading something written (at times with sections added or rewritten in a hurry) by someone who isn't a native English speaker with contributions from two other professors who also aren't native English speakers, who between them use jargon from three completely different fields, while also taking into account the fact that the end result has to be in US English rather than UK English, has been proving to be a non-trivial exercise at times! biggrinconfusehmm

I won't say anything about whether or not this weekend should be a bit quieter for fear of 'jinxing' it again, but ... we'll get there with this new mods issue - soon wink

Steven sorry to rush you on this but after just deleting a lot of spam that had clearly been on the forum all day (a lot of it not marked as spam) I feel like we could do with moving on this.

I agree. It was there all day. And there's more this morning.

And, just to say, that I expressed severe doubts about my technical abilities (here, and via a PM) as to being a good choice for a mod. And that hasn't changed (unfortunately).

But I'm sure I could delete spam - and it SO SO annoys me that I would be delighted to do so !

PS zero criticism of the current mods, of course - they do a great job, but nobody can be everywhere at once.

Sorry about this, especially to wolf for being left to deal with so much at once.

I had remembered (though I hadn't realised quite how much time had flashed by ) but doing the brief guide to modding functions I promised I'd prepare for whoever was appointed never quite got to the top of the list, hence the new mods didn't get appointed either and it looks like it only took me being away for a couple of days and other mods not being around either for the kitchen spammers to take over the asylum.

This morning's priority had to be getting next week's GB top 25 tables up, but sorting the modding situation out will be the priority for any other 'tennis' time I have this bank holiday, even if it just means appointing a couple of people to deal initially with kitchen spam with the (up to now) mythical 'guide' to follow later!

Apologies for the further delays - I have kept using up all my 'tennis time' on just keeping the GB top 25 tables up to date, determined not to fall behind with them if I can help it. I probably won't be able to help it soon, so it's a good thing we're now in the quiet season!

Anyway, an announcement is imminent - I'm just trying writing this post to get the main one at the top of a new page for those using the default post order/post per page options so it doesn't get 'lost' too quickly if people start commenting.
