RE: Week 11 - Challenger ($50,000+H) - Drummondville, Canada (hard)

Reminds me a bit of that ginger australian a few years back with the serve, Chris guacamole or whatever his name was.

Every time Barton comes to the net in this third set Dan has the answer. Cross court passing shots, lobs judged beautifully... nice tennis right now.

Barton had a decent serve, but other than that, Dan outplayed him in every other aspect of the game in the 3rd set.

The slice micester strikes again! Lovely camera angle showing his sliced backhand as he served out.

Mighty fine performance from Evo, although I only saw the last point!

I only saw the last half of the match - I'm pleased that Dan managed to the win after two first round losses.  The standard was ok but not exceptional. I'm sure there will be sterner tests ahead.

I wonder why he decided to play indoors in Canada when he could have played outside in Mexico? Surely Mexico would have been better prep for Miami next week.  Maybe the +h had an influence on his decision and maybe that is why he is playing doubles this week. If he had restricted himself to singles and lost today he would have had as much as 10 days hotel bills to pay before the start of qualies in Miami.

In general I think he is a slightly better player indoors than he is outdoors and the field here is much weaker than Mexico. After two first round losses and a couple of weeks lost to Davis Cup it was important to get back to winning ways and start picking up points again. While I am pleased that he will play Miami the ultra slow courts and very heavy conditions will not to be his liking so I am not overly optimistic for his chances there. Much better in my mind for him to focus on doing well this week rather than treating it as preparation for next week.

Think of like this, if he wins the tournament this week, which is not beyond his capabilities, he gets 90 points. In Miami coming through qualifying and winning 2 main draw matches will only get him 70 points.

Plus the fact that Dan doesn't travel well and needs friends around him. There are a few Brits here and he gets on very well with his Brummie mate.

I agree, paulisi - I think that was a key factor. And he's right. It makes a big difference to him. It's just the way it is. Canada is very 'safe', easy. He's great mates with Lloyd, seemed to be having a lot of fun training with Smethers recently, gets on well (I believe) with the Liams and Lukes of this world - its far more conducive to success.
