QF: Philip Bester (CAN) WR 303 (CH = 225 last August) vs (4) Dan Evans WR 157
QF: Frank Dancevic (CAN) WR 243 (CH = 65 in September 2007 - he's 31) vs (LL) Ed Corrie WR 532
I fear Dancevic will simply have too much for Ed.
I agree Stircrazy but Ed has made 3 or 4 quarters at challenger levels the last couple of years. All defeats but he's been close a couple of times, eventually he's going to make a semi.....could it be here???
Generally, Oakland, I'd be with you ... but Hoppy's posts have the sense of an interested party, and if she says they're from Warwickshire, I'm inclined to think she knows what she's talking about. County geography being something of an interest, I've had a look at the Warwickshire maps. Mr Evans is generally spoken of as being from Solihull rather than Birmingham per se, and Solihull Metropolitan District appears in fact to be part of Warwickshire, or to have been such before being carved out as a metropolitan district of the metropolitan county of the West Midlands. Indeed, the Warwickshire County Cricket Club is still in that area, just south of Birmingham. In my experience there are a lot of new conurbation "districts" where technically they are freestanding, but people locally still refer to them by the county of which they were historically part.
Oh, and best of luck to Warwickshire and Hertfordshire contingents today (Mr Corrie is Hertfordshire, I seem to recollect from County Cup week)
At present, the account in question says F on gender, so I assumed it was safe to say 'she' ... While I've noticed the Hertfordshire team because they've won the whole event a couple of times (or more, I lose track), I'd not recalled that Mr Evans and Mr Glasspool were on the Warwickshire county team. Thanks for the reminder!
when counties are used in sports, cricket being the most notable example but obiously true in tennis too, they would refer to the old boundaries and before 1975 Warwickshire encompassed all of Birmingham, hence why Warwickshire cricket team are based at Edgbaston
Mr Evans is generally spoken of as being from Solihull rather than Birmingham per se
Which is actually false. He is from Birmingham itself, specifically Hall Green which is a suburb in the south east of the city. I think the frequent references to him being from Solihull are based on him likely being born in Solihull hospital.
Just to add to the confusion Hall Green was part of Worcestershire prior to it's absorption into the City of Birmingham (and thus Warwickshire) in the early 20th century.
Vamos and allez. I don't want to tempt fate, but the draw is wide open for Dan. He's the only seed left, and plays 16 year old Denis Shapovalov in the semis.
Solid enough from Evo today, he has mostly played within himself so this week and apart from the first set in the first round has pretty much been on cruise control. Certainly a great chance to make the final as while Shapovalov is pretty good Evo should have more than enough to beat him.
