Decent enough draws. Is Mr Murray not playing this one?

He is (he's the second seed), but his draw/progress will be covered in the dedicated forum.  wink

Decent draws for Mr Edmund; not so great necessarily for Mr Bedene - though winnable.

And a quick cheer (before they potentially play, to get it out of the way) for M Goffin. People talk about GB being a one-person team, but that's patently untrue. The esprit de corps is massive, and a huge thing in our favour beyond the younger Mr Murray's prowess is that we have some of the world's best doubles players, so that the doubles point is a reasonable likelihood. (And, of course, our second singles contributed a key point last year, too ... and several second singles have played well enough to wear down opponents in very helpful fashion) But M Goffin this year is rather on his own. In their round 1, he beat Coric and Cilic for two singles points and tried to get the doubles as well - but they don't have a top doubles player to accompany him, so it's into the playoffs. But his was a tour de force.

You know if you stopped putting "Mr." before every single player's name in every single post, they would mean exactly the same thing and be less irritating to read

Who rattled your cage, John ? I'm sure you're not obliged to read it, if you find it irritating.

As one who can sometimes be a tad formal myself, I have to say I don't find it irritating at all!

It's not formal, it's pretentious and cringeworthy

I don't think it is pretentious nor cringeworthy, nor indeed formal.

I read it as slightly tongue-in-cheek, an amusing 'tone', to lighten the rather public school boy, prosaic nature of always calling them by their last names.

John, to each his own. I'm sorry that it grates on your ears - and feel free to ignore my comments! I know rather less than most on this board, so I don't think you'd miss much.

But they'll probably stay phrased as they are. I can't find it in me to refer to people I don't know by their first names - it's probably an age thing, but for me it feels like presuming a familiarity that I don't have - though, I have to say, it doesn't bother me when others do it, and I'm well aware that there are people on this board for whom first names are the only reasonable course of action because they do know the people involved. And for the last names, well, I am fairly formal, and I don't generally refer to other people I don't know simply by their last names. So as it's my normal way of indicating both distance and respect, I tend to use the "Mr" or "Ms" here, too, at least for the subject of a given comment (if it's just an off-handed reference to an opponent, it feels less of a question).

We each have our own experiences and our own style - it's one of the things I like about this board! But it's probably too late in the day to teach this old dog new tricks.

Thanks I'd forgotten about that demarcation between Mr Murray and the rest.

I must admit I find it abit elitist, especially after DC and Andy saying that it's all team GB, not just one person. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huuuuuge Andy fan, but also a big fan of GB tennis in general.

Not sure I find it elitist, but I too would prefer chat about Andy to be in this section rather than separate.  I know it is the way it has always been done on this board - it is called The Andy Murray Message Board after all - but I feel that now Murray is frequently not the sole British entrant in tour events that it rather stifles chat about him.  Posts often amount to not much more than scores, possibly because all the chitchat about an event has already been posted in this section where his compatriots have been under discussion.  Just an opinion.......

 This.

I think the forum would benefit if Andy was included in the main section, often in the next year we are going to have Kyle and Dan in qualies and would be good to continue the conversation on rather than reverting between 2 threads for the same tournament.

Just my opinion.

I'm with you, and nice to see Kyle and hopefully Dan becoming relevant to the big tournament threads. Andy is so consistent in the first week of slams I hardly give his thread a glance until week 2. One thread per tournament would get my vote.

Believe it or not, I actually toyed with the idea of tacking on Andy's draw when I posted the other two... wink

Well so far we all seem to be of the same opinion. Is there a mod we can talk to to see if the is a goer?
