Week 10 - ATP Masters 1000 - Indian Wells, CA, USA - Hard

QR1: Josh Milton WR 330 v (q11) Bjorn Fratangelo (USA) WR 149 (CH 106 last Aug)

H2H 1-0 - Josh won 3 & 4 at Austin (Texas) Futures in 2012.

I'm a bit surprised to see Josh here when he played Challenger qualifying in China at the weekend - presumably (I'd check but it's late!) Indian Wells is notionally treated as a week 11 event and hence this is allowed.

Edit:  thread title amended as per BiS's comment.  wink

Josh seems to be the only Brit in men's qualies.  A big step up  in level for him!  Good luck to him anyway.

Also appears that the tournament has been downgraded from an ATP 1000 to an ATP 100. Perhaps that is how Josh sneaked into qualies  wink

Sorry Steven.  Couldn't resist disbelief

I guess you have to take the opportunity when it arises. Is this a particular high cut off to normal for Qualies at Indian wells?

So how would Josh make it in here? Did I not see in the Week 10 Entries thread that even Wardy's ranking was too low

Good to see Josh there anyway. Hopefully Evo was able to give him some pointers.

In the end James would easily have made it in but had committed to playing elsewhere.

Nice wee £1300 or so to pick up as well. Winning this match would almost be equal to getting to the final of the challenger he didnt even qualify for. That must have been at the back of his mind when he lost in qualies you'd think in China.

Dozy me - the silly thing is, I knew it looked a bit wrong but in my by then very sleepy haze, having been trying to work on some 'real' stats (more hypothesis testing than tennis numbers, I mean) late into the night, I couldn't work out what it was disbelief

Hats off to Milts for coming up with this plan, and he's up on the H2H.

Aljaz drew Youzhny, plays RBA if he wins.

Kyle drew Pella, plays Cuevas if he wins, then probably Goffin. In terms of seedings, couldn't have got a better draw.

Ouch, Josh is being dealt with here. Trails 6-2 4-1*

Fratangelo has won 20/21 on first serve and 8/9 on second. Hard to see a break back

Decent draws for Mr Edmund; not so great necessarily for Mr Bedene - though winnable.

And a quick cheer (before they potentially play, to get it out of the way) for M Goffin. People talk about GB being a one-person team, but that's patently untrue. The esprit de corps is massive, and a huge thing in our favour beyond the younger Mr Murray's prowess is that we have some of the world's best doubles players, so that the doubles point is a reasonable likelihood. (And, of course, our second singles contributed a key point last year, too ... and several second singles have played well enough to wear down opponents in very helpful fashion) But M Goffin this year is rather on his own. In their round 1, he beat Coric and Cilic for two singles points and tried to get the doubles as well - but they don't have a top doubles player to accompany him, so it's into the playoffs. But his was a tour de force.
