Seen Monica do that to plenty over the years; you think you have her beaten, then, all of a sudden, somehow, you don't. Whilst you're trying to figure out how that happened, Niculescu has runaway to the win, and the opponent walks off dazed, frustrated and disbelieving.
Heather's in good company today, sadly
I am with ISF (in that posting at 03:19) in that I am a big fan of variety, the fact that passive agressive tennis exists close to the highest level and other technically more rounded and powerful players have to deal with it excites me. Although Evo has much more to his game than his backhand slice, it is a shot of beauty that is aimed to frustrate and induce an error as opposed to deliver a winner, I have no problem with a player who embraces that philosophy more fully particularly when in a minority of one! If it were to become the modus operandi of the entire top 20, well I'd turn over and feast my eyes on the athletic specimens playing darts.
Not sure I really understand this comment. Did I write something particularly stupid?
No - I did.
I was trying to imply that there didn't appear to be any legitimate way that Ms Robson could get several match wins at the required level; There has been a recent run of reporting on match fixing, and it appeared that the match fixers could actually help.
Unfunny. Unnecessary. Sorry.

Oh....no worries.....I can be a bit slow at times!!
I don't think Heather was ever quite at it in this tournament, but the important thing is that when she was on better form last week she fully capitalised.
Niculescu is a frustrating player to play against, especially in this match as Heather knew her best tennis was good enough to win but she just couldn't find enough of it. On the wider Niculescu discussion, I like watching her play and I think it's part of the appeal of the Women's game that players can have a very different approach to achieving success. She plays Radwanska next and that should be a good one.
Jo's opponent Madison Brengle is a player that on the few times I've seen her play makes me wonder how she is ranked so high (and has better a career high than Heather). I'm hoping her ranking is still a mystery to me by the end of today's match!
Some good stuff in that set, along with the customary Jo howlers - one overhead I conservatively estimate was 8 feet long and 3 feet wide.
Didn't flicker when the break was relinquished and just broke again and closed it out.
Better ball striking and choice of shot than in Monterrey.
Impressed by the pep talk from Jo's coach.
Already a break up in the second.
